I've always had decent luck with U-Haul, but I notice that the rental centers are usually some franchise put into a dive of a building with some high-school dropouts.

I am going to save this and send it to them :p I never knew so many people had trouble with Uhaul. Cant we just combine forces and use ghandi techniques on them until they treat us like customers and not marks.

uhaul doesn't care. they work on the principle of telling people to go fvck themselves unless you actually sue them. in which case they will settle with you and then continue screwing over everyone else on the bet that most people won't take it very far. a serious class action lawsuit would finish uhaul.

Never had a problem with reservations...normally just POS vehicles.

A Ryder truck move from San Diego to Phoenix...hit a freak rain storm between Yuma and Gila Bend, truck leaked and I was sitting in water for over an hour. I could wait a few hours for a service technician, drive an hour back the way I came to a service facility or I could drive a few hours to Phoenix and finish the trip...

Local move,Uhaul, drivers side window stuck in the up position, cabin smelled like sh!t, one spring in the entire front seat. Nearly could not get this lovely beast because the place tried to close 10 minutes early, but did get solicitied by a bum outside.

Advice from my experience:
I've heard too many bad, bad, bad things about UHaul to even attempt to use them. Try Budget Truck Rental. You can get a local cargo van or 10-foot truck for $20 (M-Th), $30 (F-Su) and the miles are $0.77.

Most of these truck rental places are locally owned. If you have a problem that you can't work out with the owner, you call the 800 number and they'll over-ride any billing issues.

BONUS:
If you use a certain Google Link to the Budget Truck Rental Web site, you'll get a 10% discount on the rental rate and miles. It shows up in the quote after you enter the info on what truck you want and when you want it.

Another vote for U-Haul is the worst company I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with.
Their trucks are pieces of crap. We had one break down on the way from San Diego to Oregon. Had to wait hours for them to fix the thing. There was a piece on 60 minutes or some other news show a few years ago where they rented U-Hauls and had mechanics look them over. What they found was that virtually all the trucks had multiple problems that made them unsafe to even drive.

Their reservations are meaningless. Even if you make a reservation, it doesn't guarantee that you will have a truck. We gave notice of moving out of an apartment. The plan was to pick up a U-Haul on Saturday, move all our stuff, clean the place on Sunday and hand in the keys on Monday. Well, when we showed up at U-Haul to get our truck, they said, sorry, we don't have one available. I explained that I had a reservation and they said it didn't matter, that didn't guarantee us a truck. I couldn't rent from somone else, because U-Haul had already put a hold on my CC for the amount of the rental and deposit charges and I didn't have enough credit left to go rent somewhere else. They said it would take a couple of days before that hold could be removed. Sunday, they didn't have a truck either. Finally got one on Monday, had to extend our move-out date and pay a couple extra days of rent, and U-Haul couldn't care less.

I've rented from both Budget and Ryder without any problems. Their trucks are much newer, nicer, and cleaner. They both gave me trucks in good condition and provided good customer service. And it was only slightly more expensive. I will NEVER again use U-Haul for anything. It is NOT worth the small savings.

after having a similar experience i've decided never to use the big names again and just go with the small local mom&pops.
The UHaul I go to IS a small mom and pop outfit. My dad went to HS with the guy who ran it, he recently died and they sold the franchise to a mom and pop towing company down the road.

The online reservation does suck, and they keep crazy hours (they usually leave at 2:30). I've always gotten what I want by calling them though.

If you're not totally turned off to uhaul by the thread so far, here's a tip. With trailers, there's no mileage charge on a 2 way move, you pay per day. If you can move in 24 hours, you pay for one day.

When I moved out for my first internship, the uhaul was like $120 with the insurance going one way with a trailer. I rented "in town" for the same move for $26, with the insurance.

I didn't know you have to pay $5 to make reservations..

I used UHaul back in August and did not have any problems. They did get mad, because I kept rescheduling like 4 times, but that was my fault.
I would not have called the 1-800 phone number.. just call the local number and reserve a truck..

Overall, I had really good experience with them (local)..

I reserved a truck when I graduated from college. When I called, they said "We're out of trucks, don't you know it's graduation week?" They "allowed" me to upgrade (and pay for) something WAY too big that I almost killed myself in. I probably used double the gas, too. The obvious question, why did they give away that last truck if I had a reservation? Overbooking? General lack of math skills? Who knows. They also charge $10 to rent a dolly (I had an Arcade game to move), but I just bought one for $15 at Harbor Freight tools. They also want you to buy your own Master lock. Again: buy your own elsewhere for less.

I actually found Penske to be the cheapest - they offer discounts for booking online, as well as AAA discount (if you're a member). The truck I rented from them had 4,000 miles on it, and was in perfect shape. Made the 500 mile trip no problem.

Budget seems good too - if you go into a post office and pick up a "change of address" packet, there's a coupon in there for 10% off your rental from them.

I've heard nothing but bad things about Uhaul - not to mention, they were actually the most expensive that I saw, once discounts from the others were factored in.

On my last move, I ended up buying a truck for $1500 off Ebay and driving it from Evansville, IN to Massapequa, NY. I'm currently in the process of selling it. I'll be happy if I break even on it - if I make a profit, that's an added bonus. It's like getting a free moving truck :D
