Never ever use Uhaul reservation service

Saturday I needed to use a truck. Went to the nearest Uhaul and it was closed (closed on saturday at noon?) So I went home and called some other nearby Uhaul locations. There was no answer at these locations. I determined that it was going to be much more difficult to locate a truck than is expected. I went on Uhaul's website and found 1800gouhaul.

Make a reservation for that day - they said theyd call me back with a time and location. Very quickly they contact me and tell me that they have a reservation for me however they made a reservation at a location nearly 40 miles away from my home (.89c * milage == moving company.) I tell them that the location is not even near my area (which they had asked me for!) and politely ask if they could check for something closer. The operator asks for my location again and says they will call back if they can find an alternative. 45 minutes go by and I have not recieved a call so I contact them again and tell them that if they cannot find a close location today to just change the reservation for tomorrow. Of course they tell me that is not a problem at all and they will call me back to let me know where my reservation has been made.

They lied it certainly was a huge problem, they never call me back (I had the phone next to me for the next 5 -6 hours until 10pm.) The next morning I call them again and tell them my situation. The lady on the phone apologizes and tells me that I have a reservation at Location A near my home and that the center was supposed to contact me not reservations but she apologizes. I call Location A to be placed on hold for a long time. I call Location A back after 15 - 20 minutes of holding and ask if the center could just call me back as soon as possible and that it is about a reservation that was made at their location for this day. An hour goes by and I havent been contacted - calling Location A back I am immediately placed on hold before I could say much of anything so I call reservations back. Reservations gets Location A to call me back immediately. Location A tells me they have no reservation specified for me and no trucks available all day!

Back to reservations I tell them that Location A does not have a truck for me and that they do not have my reservation. Reservations says that the location is responsible for "downloading" the reservations and that they must not have done so. I ask to speak to a supervisor but one is not available on Sunday.

Monday and Tuesday im at school so I call first thing today (Wednesday for those who are having trouble following my long rant) after some work I manage to speak to the supervisor who tells me a number of irritating things. 1) I had a reservation at Location A for saturday [this isnt true its right next to my house I was told a different location than Location A] 2) My reservation was changed to Location A and then changed again to Location B! 3) Even though I was never notified of a change to Location B after several phone calls to reservations she still cannot refund the "5 dollar nonrefundable service (HAH!) fee" nor give me any kind of discount on future reservations but she CAN make a reservation for me for today!

She would not allow me to speak to her manager.

What is the next step?

CLIFF NOTES: Paid 5 dollars for a reservation - reservation is 40 miles away and then changed to the next day - reservation location claims there is no reservation for me - reservation moved again but no one ever notifies me - Uhaul refuses to give me my 5 dollars back (its a nonrefundable "service" fee - WHAT SERVICE!?) - I want to know what steps to go through next.

What is the next step?

You screwed up by picking UHaul in the first place. What a horrible horrible company.

We rented a UHaul 1.5 years ago, the truck broke down 2 miles from the rental location and they refused to swap out the truck and made us wait for a repair man. We waited for 3-4 freaking HOURS those SOB's.

The manager was a rude ahole and the employees looked like they had never even made it to high school.

They charged the 5 dollar fee? Just dispute it and be done with it. After the first no call back I would have been done with them. You must like to take it up the ass. j/k :p

They charged your credit card that 5 dollars. If so call the credit card company, and tell them you want to dispute a charge.

I assume you have had good expierence with this company?

I see that I need to write "Billing Inquiries." and claim the charge is for services not delivered as agreed upon.

I have never heard of a company being so rude and unbelievably arrogant... especially not over $5. She could have possibly kept me as a customer just by refunding me $5!

There's a reason why UHaul is so much cheaper than any other truck rental. You get what you pay for.

Where do you find this mythical mom & pops place. I can only find mom and pops places for eating and even that is getting hard. There was a sandwhich shop that I went to twice a week here and theyre gone. An italian restraunt also is gone now. There are no mom and pops places theyre a myth.

I would love it if there were a local mom and pops grocer where everyone knows your name. I would love it if there were even a restraunt still around my area that is decent that isnt some huge chain (well there is a pizza place but thats all)

Consider the $5 a cheap lesson on why not to use uhaul.

You can still fight it, but, in the long run you probably saved a bit by learning now instead of actually getting further in the hell that is uhaul.

Just my opinion.

As I have not yet had the opportunity to use other carriers, I can't recommend one but I've not heard any complaints like I have with uhaul from the others.

Also, There seems to be a ton of people that are going with these 'PODS' things nowadays, not sure if that helps but basically a truck drops off a large box (a shed like thing) that you load with your items to be moved, it comes back to pick it up and bring to a destination of your choosing where you can then unload it. I don't know if it's worthwhile for in-town moves but another option to consider.

See my avatar im just a cow youre old and experienced im not. Anyways I was kinda concerned that they would fight the dispute. Technically they told me it is nonrefundable - however they definately didnt provide me with the service that we agreed upon.

while driving to one of the places i saw a small rental shop that had a few trucks. i went in, asked if they had any trucks available for THAT DAY and they said yes and quoted me a price that was CHEAPER than the big names. keep in mind that this was thanksgiving weekend of 2003, the last weekend of november.

they were really friendly and really helped us out of our bind.

Even better
Throw a brick at their truck

I've heard nothing but bad things about reserving trucks from Uhaul. I've used them a couple times, but never reserved a truck. I just drive up and say "I need a truck."

I used UHaul in Atlanta to drive some stuff up to Knoxville. Short 3 hour drive, no worries. Sure enough, it's middle of August and after leaving the gas station where I waited an hour to get the damn thing, I realize the A/C is broke. An hour up 75 and there a wreck. 1.5 hours before traffic moves again. Thankfully the wife was behind me so I hopped in her car while we were waiting on the interstate. One of the most miserable trips I've ever done. Hotter than hell in that thing.

Screw Uhaul. There were a few other problems with that trip as well. I've never used them again and never will.

oh never ever call the l1800 number to reserve a truck! also the online reservation sucks!

We just moved about 5 months ago and we had major trouble with U-haul. We reserved a 21ft truck 2 weeks before oure move date. Well they e-mailed us and called us saying that the truck would be at the local place. The email also said to call 24hours before to make sure they had it (that should have been a warning right there). Well i called the 1800 number and they said yes it is there. But i drove by the local place (right behind Dairy Queen yumm blizzards) and i noticed that they had only 2 small trucks! so i called the local place and they said they did not have my reservation.

call 1800 again and they say yes i have a truck reserved but it was 60+ miles away! WTF! eventually the day of the move at noon we got 2 14ft trucks for the price of the 21foot. They said they would only charge us milage for one but they charged my credit card for both (yes i disputed it and had it taken off).

I will NEVER use Uhaul again.

I used Uhaul to move into my house. They did the same thing by assigning me a reservation in another city. After playing a game of musical reservations with them and finding confirmed reservations not being honored, I promised never to use them again.
