never eat from a dented can

I always thought that was a bit alarmist but tonight my cats fancy feast can that had a small dent. Opened the can and look what I found

if the can is still sealed, you're fine, in theory. i'd call fancy feast and let them know. would suck if it were a lot # problem 🙁

I don't think the dent caused whatever that is. The problem with dents is they can breach the lining, and the can will start to disolve, but until air gets in, it'll be safe, but perhaps a bit metallic tasting.

edit:
One exception to swollen cans=bad is surströmming. Those cans are supposed to bulge. Get some if you can find it. It's a treat you'll never forget.

Fanatical Meat, that has nothing to do with the can being dented. Moisture got into the can to make those spores, prob due to excess heat when it was sitting in the warehouse/loading dock/etc. Have used dozens of can foods over the years that were dented, never had an issue. Like Fenixgoon said, call Franny Feast, they will send you a coupon for a new can or something.

After looking that up I'm not sure I could bring myself to just pick a piece out of a can and eat. However if some was already pre-prepared in a small tasting portion I would probably at least try it....

I only risk dented if the stores discount dented cans. I know some used to but it's definitely very risky. Nothing is more important than your health.

Might be some Korean dishes on that list too actually, but nothing as uhh incredibly delicious as good ol surströmming. I tell people all the time, 'Oh you like anchovies? Oh man, get you some baltic herring, you haven't lived until you've had it out of the can.'

That's good eats.

In complete seriousness, is mold/mildew really that big of a deal? I've always wondered.... Especially when I have fucking delicious leftovers and see one spec on it and throw it away 🙁

I'll cut mold off bread, cheese, and fruit, or scoop it out of yogurt if I can do it cleanly, but I really have to want the item to bother. Cheese and bread are the easiest to deal with.
