Never buy a GPS from Magellan

So I bought a Magellan GPS last year from Sears. It was ok, but the sound quality was pretty bad on the speaker and the maps had a lot of errors/flaws. I paid $250 for the unit plus shipping....for a total of $280 (at the time, that was a good price)

I was under the impression that they updated their maps. I called their tech support last year after I bought it and they even told me a new map update would come out in the Fall. It turns out that now they're offering a newer unit at a discount instead of updating the maps. (btw...the discount is $16 more expensive than what the unit costs from Amazon.com)

Their tech support used to be in California...last year. Now its in India. The people are nice and speak good English, but the phone quality is TERRIBLE. They get cut off constantly when speaking.

Anyhow....between lack of maps, poor brand design, and louzy customer/tech support....no one has any authority, nor do they know anything about the company....STAY AWAY. This company has changed so much from 5 years ago.

Thanks. I have been looking at the Magellan as a second GPS. Very happy with my Garmin so it looks like I'll stick with it.

I own both (actually many of both) and each one has its strengths and weaknesses. Their low end range is about the same, but you start to see more differences later in mid-range and high end series.

I like Garmin low end models and Magellan's high end models.

Haven't used many car navigations ones though, mine are most geared towards outdoor activities.

Garmin's software would be perfect if they gave you some of the routing choices that Magellans usually do. Like when you're scrolling through the list of turns on a Magellan, you can tap on a segment and remove it (like if you know a certain street is always gridlocked, etc.). Can't do that on a Garmin. But that's not too bad, so I love my Garmin c530 all the same :) Never used a TomTom though...

Yeah, the TomTom navigation allows you to find alternative routes if there is something you want to avoid. They're pretty good with their planing options like that and finding routes without tolls, etc. I'm using a TomTom ONE XL right now which is pretty sweet, but the new 720 with its new map share technology looks like the thing of the future though.

Well I just bought a Mio a few weeks ago, and I have to say it is great! I had a Magellan and I somewhat know what you mean, the maps were pretty bad.
