Taking a work related flight out to Texas later this week. I've never been on a flight before and I'm a bit nervous. What should I expect?

Oh, also what's the chances of me getting air sick?

expect to be bored
low chance of airsickness, especially on a larger plane. your average car ride is orders of magnitude bumpier.

You will be seated near a crying baby, or an obese woman with noxious flatulence.

Nothing to worry about. Except the engine flying apart and the plane plummeting to the ground and exploding in a huge ball of fire. Or the door failing and everyone being sucked out to fall 20,000 feet to their death. Or that monster that is out on the wing, taking it apart.

Try to not scream like a schoolgirl when you hear the incredibly loud grinding thunk just after takeoff. Either it's just the landing gear being retracted, or else the engine just fell off.

If you get bored in the security line, start talking loudly about your expertise in military explosives. Elaborate on how the government has made your life a living hell, and if the plane plummeted to the ground in a fiery ball of death it would be a vast improvement. The TSA guys always get a big kick out of it!

You should expect to be treated like cattle.

Really, flying is like riding a bus. Just sit back and watch the clouds go by.

Step 1: Grow Beard

Step 2: Take out laptop on the plane, angled so another passenger can see it

Step 3: Close eyes, raise arms, start to mumble some arabic gibberish

Step 4: Load this webpage: Text

If the recent attendance rate of my co-workers is any indication...expect to catch the flu.

Please note, if the clouds are moving from the bottom of the window to the top at a very high rate of speed it's not good.

No big deal, just lean into the turns and everything will be fine.

You'll be fine, enjoy the experience, flying is an incredible thing to do if you can get over the fact you're so high up, it's incredibly safe.

That wouldn't happen. If a plane was descending rapidly, it wouldn't be falling straight down. You may see the clouds going from corner to corner. If your descent was steep enough, they would still be going from right to left. (Assuming you're strapped into your seat.)

Don't worry about any noises either as someone mentioned before, anything you hear you're meant to hear, ei landing gear retracting or lowering gets a lot of people the first time.

Be ready to take off your shoes and belt when you go through security. If you have to catch a connecting flight along the way don't leave the airport's security area or you'll have to go through security all over again.

Good chance if you are constantly thinking about it. You can work yourself into a frenzy. Just try to get a seat over the wings. That is where the center of gravity is and the least amount of movement. A window seat may help along with using the fans to blow air on your face. I would avoid trying to use alcohol to cope with the nervousness. The pressure altitude inside the airplane is around 8000 feet so it intensifies the effect of alcohol.
