Networking Woes

Alright, I'll try to explain this as best as I can.

A couple of weeks ago, I got a notebook computer. I also have a desktop computer. Knowing that I would be getting cable Internet soon after getting the notebook, I went ahead and got a wireless router. So I networked the two computers for file and printer sharing. I had no troubles doing that. Both computers are running Windows XP with SP2. The notebook has a built-in Wi-Fi.

But yesterday, I got the cable connection. I then repositioned the cables so that the desktop was connected to the Internet through the router. That worked fine. I'm also able to access the Internet through the notebook with no troubles. But now, the two computers aren't networked. So I can't access files share the printer on the two computers.

I've tried setting up a new network for file sharing about 5 times now. What could be the problem? I tried finding some sort of guide for having this particular type of network setup, but I couldn't come up with anything. It's not an uncommon configuration, so maybe someone here can either help me directly or point me in the right direction.

So let me get this right. One client is wired, one client is wireless. When the desktop is plugged into the router can you ping your notebook? Are they on the same workgroup? Do you have the XP firewall still enabled? And last of all, do you like beer? 😛

I'm not sure how to ping. But I do know that on the desktop, I can see that computer in the workgroup. But I cannot see the notebook. I have Windows Firewall off on both machines, but have Norton Internet Security Installed on both with the firewalls enabled, but I believe I have allowed the computers on the network.

Hey, I'm not exactly sure what I did. But I think I got my problem fixed. Thanks for trying. I might come here more often for computer help. Someone referred me here for this problem I was having. So don't be surprised if I come back some day. Heh.
