Networking question?

I have just moved to a linux firewall router (astaro security linux) for a firewall and dhcp server.

Previously I was using a mircosoft Broadband Networking Wireless Base Station MN-700 for dhcp and wireless internet. The basestation has one wan and 5 ethernet ports.

I can set the wireless base station to be in access point mode only ( it says with this no nat firewall or dhcp). Will it still work as a switch?

What i want to do is have cable modem connected to linux box, linux box to wan on wireless basestation and then connect my three computers to the ports on the wireless basestation.

So that it would act as a switch and i would still get my wireless interest.

would this work or do i need to buy a separate switch?

thanks

If you want to have one Network including all of your computers, then you better do what you saw on EZLAN.NET.

If your Router can accept private IP at the WAN port, you can connect to the WAN port of the Router.

However, connecting to the WAN port put a second Routing element. You would have second independent Network, and double NATing.

mmmmmm, double NATing....

Unless I misunderstood the plot. The Linux Box is doing the First NAT.

Connecting to the Wan Port of the Base Station will yield a second NAT to whatever is connected to the Base Station ports.

Hence Double NATing which yields One Big Nothing. 😕😱:Q:disgust::brokenheart::|🙁

So, disable DHCP and NAT and connect the Astaro Box to a LAN port. Make sure that you do not use the WAN port. Now your wireless router should act like a wireless switch.

Use the WAN port, there should be no problem using that once DHCP and NAT are off. It should work just like
any other port. The trick is if they will allow you to disable NAT. Once NAT is off, you are left with a switch.

Hmmmm, can you use the WAN Port and diable the NAT. I mean you actually tried it or you hope so?😕

Put a piece of tape over it, stuff play-dough in it, or whatever you have to do. Do NOT use the WAN port on the SOHO router if your linux box is handling the NAT for you.
