Ok i dont know what else to do, Im not sure what the problem is. My wifes PC that connects to the internet through my PC (XP Internet sharing)just stopped connecting to the internet. I have replaced the NIC on my host PC and i just replaced the 100mb hub. I still cant ping the 3 PC's i have on my small home network. I have bounced all PC's, Checked all services and all looks ok.

I am just not getting any comm over my wire and why i cant is driving me nuts. New NIC, New HUB, I brought home a continuity tester and my cat-5's test fine. I have goodl lights on the NIC's and hub.

When i ping by name i get unkown
when i ping by IP i get timeouts.

When I unplug her wire from the hub, a message pops up saying "home" is now disconnected. WHen i plug the wire back in a message pops up "Home now connected at 100mb"

I just dont get it, even though i cant get her pc on the internet i should be able to ping within my own little network. WTF IS WRONG!!! :|

any suggestions?

Is it getting an IP from the XP DHCP or is it defaulting to the 169 address it assigns when it can't pull an address?

switches are better, and why not just get a home router and have both PC's plugged into that?

because we have a crap load of old baynetwors 100mb hubs at work that we replaced with Dell Switches. Free + = good. and its only me an my wife's pc connecting no real need to spend 40 bucks on a switch.

gotcha, sometime the best thing to try is just restarting everything and make sure the internet connection sharing didn't get turned off or anything

try plugging in each PC directly to the modem, if they both connect you can rule out modem troubles or ISP problems

ipconfig release and renew

i dunno could be a number of things

Is the Windows Firewall turned on? If so, do you have ICMP open?

I never haven't set up ICS since 2000 way back when, so I'm just guessing with XP.

gateway set?

it's definitely physically connected.

can you manually set ip address and such for your network connection when using XP Internet sharing (i hate xp internet sharing btw).

check and see if the other pc's are getting an IP address. then check to see if the gateway is set. the ip address of your pc will probably set or probably should be set as the gateway.

good luck.

1) You need to make sure all your PC's are in the same workgroup name-space
2) You need to make sure all PC's are operating in the same subnet
3) You need to make sure your subnet mask allows your range of IP addresses
4) If you're using a host PC with dual NICS and ICS enabled then make sure your share NIC has a static IP and your client PC's have DHCP enabled
5) If all else fails.. Google is your friend 😉
6)???
7) PROFIT!

something that would also be helpful is the lay out of your "network"

internet connection to wifes computer to your comptuer to hub to other sh!t... what exactly is it?

a layout for 3 machines???

ok, mine connects to the ineternet via dialup. I share that connection with my wifes XP machine and until yesterday it has worked fine.

I have a 24 port Bay Networks 100mb hub that i just replaced with another

My wifes PC connects to the internet through the hub to my PC out to the cloud.

My little POS PC that i have as a file server is only used to connect to the shared drives on it.

I can not Ping, tracert, ipconfig /anything because i cant get ANY COMM across my wires.

My question is WHY!!!!! UGGGGG, by all rights I should be able to fricken ping my other machines.

C:\ping oinker
Ping request could not find host oinker. Please check the name and try again.

C:\ping 192.168.0.2
