OK, I'm moving into a 3 bedroom apartment in a few weeks and we need to setup something for internet access. We have boiled it down to 3 options (in order from least desirable to most):

1. Since all the rooms have cable, we each get our own cable modem and not even setup a network.
2. We wire the apartment ourselves with cat5 for a wired network to share one internet connection.
3. We setup a wireless network to share one connection.

I've dealt with cable modems are wired networks in the past, but I know very little about wireless. I am thinking we will need a router and then wireless nics for our systems. Two of us have desktops and one has a notebook. What are our best options for a router and for NICs? Also, our rooms are separated by closets and walls. Are the wireless networks capable of keeping up a good bandwidth even through walls, and shared by 3 systems? Any and all suggestions are welcomed. Thanks in advance.

exactly what are you looking for? Get a wireless setup if ur only sharing internet connection, get a wired setup if u need both internet and file sharing. Dont get separate cable modems because it will cost more money.

I'd go with cat5, its cheaper than wireless, and you won't have 3 cable bills coming to the place. If the floors are carpeted, get yourself a nice big flathead screwdriver and some nice long patch cables and gently stuff the cable under the carpet between the tack strip and the baseboard. Makes for a nice clean looking installation, and its easily pulled out when you move. You may need to get a pair of pliers or wire cutters, something that will grab carpet will to pull corners up a tad to get it around nicely.

You would probably want a fishtape (A big long flat piece of metal) to help pull cable under the carpet. It'd be a real challenge without it.

How big is the apartment? You might be able to get away with wireless to a single router/access point combo and you wouldn't have to mess with installing wires or paying an extra $100 a month for two more cable Internet connections.

Of course, wireless would run you a couple of hundred bucks for an bridge/Access Point and three cards - A cheapo router which you run your cables to would only be about $40. IF you can afford it and it works OK, wireless is probably best, otherwise run your cables.
