network / router trouble

The brainpower in this team is top notch so I got a quick problem/question.

I have a linksys 4 port router and @home cable. Some PC's (all Win98) I have specified their IP's, DNS, gateway, etc... and some are on Auto (DHCP).

Everything worked fine until about 4 weeks ago. Now, I am having a weird DNS problem.

My main box will connect right away to the internet. All other win98 boxes have DNS errors *unless* I specify the actual IP address in IE. Once I hit enter about 10 times, the web page loads and DNS works fine until the end of the session.

Out of curiosity, I installed BEOS on PC #2, put my gateway, DNS, IP settings in and it worked right away.

Windows has struck me another blow.

The PC's that can't connect can ping my gateway, both DNS servers, anything really. They just don't resolve DNS until I specify the IP (like yahoo @ 64.58.76.176)

Am I going MAD or do all my bases belong to Bill Gates?

The search button eluded me again, gonna try this now.

I get a smack for not searching, but I doubled my keyrate the last week so I need some slack.

hey pal, maybe I can help 🙂

1.) turn off DHCP

2.) right click on network neiborhood

3.) Select TCP/IP

4.) Click Properties

6.) Set all PC's IP addresses by hand.

7.) oh crap I don't have win 98

8.) ummm Ill get back to you but do steps 1 - 4 in the meantime.

I hate that stupid POS 4 port router. I was having problems with it one day and I called @home and everything to verify settings even though I knew they were right cause it was working before mainly.. they told me my connection was fine and that there were no problems, I tried to enter the Linksys setup using the standard 192.168.1.1 and I couldn't even get into the setup. It used to go in instantly and then it would not even budge sitting there on lookin up host or whatever, naturally I tried resetting the router, restarting my computer, and playing with all the connections, I could not get it fixed!! the thing seems to work fine and then it goes to crap.. I got a well deserved refund for mine, nothing but a bothersome POS!
I picked up a 3com 5-port switch instead.. I just use my older PIII as a server/router.

i can give you some steps that will most likely solve your problem as i know quite a bit about cable modems and how they work.. 😉

1) power cycle the modem (unplug the power from the wall for a minuite) - (yeah, it actually does something).

2) power cycle your router (unplug the power from the wall for a minute).

3) power cycle one of the computers.

4) if it doesnt work, then re-install tcp/ip. (its really easy)..

5) in the control panel, under the network and then tcp/ip properties, make sure that DNS is DISABLED and that WINS Resolution is also disabled. make sure that your GATEWAY is blank.

6) make sure your router is setup to give DNS (also all the rest, gateway, ip address) information (dhcp) out (telnet in and check settings).

7) run WINIPCFG and see if the other computer gets DNS, Gateway and IP Address from the router. if not, check the router settings again, depending on your configuration.

8) if this all fails, go to your main computer, run WINIPCFG and hit the INFO button. copy the DNS servers here and specify them manually in the other computers (Press the ... to get alternate servers) - DNS servers dont usually change that often.. if they still dont get IP addresses, specify them like 192.168.0.10 and 192.168.0.11, etc.. if they dont get a gateway, fill the gateway in with the correct value..

..

if none of that works, then i dont know what the problem could be ...

Haven't had a chance to mess with it much, but thanks for all the replies. Changing my DNS server didn't work. I'll play more with it soon.
