Network Printer Problems

Hello all! I’m a long time lurker :)ninja:), first time poster :)awe:). I have a question regarding network printers and I hope someone might be able to help.

I’m helping out a small business who uses a Canon imageRUNNER network printer. Currently, a majority of the computers on the network/domain can print to the Canon. However, a few select PCs on the network/domain are unable to print to the Canon.

On these select PCs, you can easily locate and add the Canon (drivers install fine). However, whenever you go to print a test page or anything, the print job gets stuck in the queue and encounters an error. I have the correct drivers as they work on other PCs.

A few things I’ve tried:

-Remove and “Add printer” again. Locates and installs fine, just when we I go to print it gets mucked up.
-Ping the printer’s IP. Packet loss as only 2/4 packets are received.
-Eventually got it working on one of those PCs. The print jobs did take longer it seemed, almost a minute longer to for the printer to receive the print job. Unfortunately, it eventually stopped printing to the Canon and flooded the queue.

I’m fairly certain it is a network issue, but I’m not sure on how to proceed. Another thing I still need to check and see if there is a network switch as all the problem PCs are located in the front of the office, on the other side of the building from the server room (not 100% sure how everything is wired, no network diagram available).

I truly appreciate any help or thoughts. Thanks!

What are the source documents? If PDF, try reducing the print resolution to 300dpi. (at 600dpi it floods the device (seen often in laserjets).

Check your network. I suspect a bad patch, patch panel, in-wall run, jack, failing NIC, bad port on switch, etc.

Yeah, mostly PDFs, MS Office (.docx, .xlsx, etc...). I'll take another look and see what the print resolution is set for.

Kind of what I was thinking too. I'll probably start troubleshooting all the network related areas next.

Thanks, I appreciate the help and feedback!

I would recommend solving the network problem first.

Start by comparing the network settings of the machines that are able to print vs. those that cannot...
