First timer here - please forgive (in advance) any newbie mistakes I may make!

I have an external Alcatel ADSL modem and a Linksys DSL router that I am using for my home network. On this network I have one machine running Windows XP, and two running 98 SE. I'm now trying to configure my work laptop (Compaq Armada 500/Win98SE using Novell not NT) to give me network and internet connectivity at home. To accomplish this, I've added a Belkin NIC with the Microsoft Adapters etc. to make everything work. After running the XP networking diskette on the laptop I've gotten it to the point that I'm on the LAN and can see the other systems, but I'm not getting internet connectivity. Where am I going wrong in configuring for internet accessability also?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Jack:

Thank you for the FAQ's. After reading through them it would appear that I've got connectivity only because of file and print sharing being enabled. I tried changing the bindings as you've suggested. Now I'm only seeing one of the other computers (Win98) on the network neighborhood and still have no internet. On the last part of the second FAQ you mentioned cloning a MAC address. Since this is with the router does that mean that I need to reconfigure the router with this laptop in place and it will see - and provide for an IP address for this machine to also have connectivity to the internet? If not, I'm still lost!

Thanks for your help to this point! If nothing else, I'm a persistent ah heck.

RW:

Thanks for the suggestions. I saw your NetBIOS post on another thread and had checked to see if it was the problem in my case. It must not be because mine is checked yes (grayed out). This computer has been on the internet in a number of different situations.

1. On my docking station at work. Novell, zenworks, groupwise - yuck - but they work fine there.
2. In hotels on business trips. I've used both a 56.6 internal dial-up and several weeks ago got it to DHCP (I think) through the fast internet connection in the hotel. It worked great! I'm perplexed.

Thanks again,

Thanks again for the suggestion. At this point, I've got the computer back on my network by assigning it an IP address even though my others are using the XP machine the DHCP (I believe) as the server. I can browse to other machines in the network including the XP machine which has the external DSL Modem and Router configured to it. I'm beginning to think I've got some type of DNS settings messed up. What would my settings be?

Thanks for the help. After fudging through it all for hours, I've finally gotten everything to agree. I can now not only see all of my home workgroup, I can use the internet also.

Thanks again,

Great. What finally did it? There are so many different things to try, it can drive you crazy. What I hate is when you spend 4 hours fixing something, finally get it to work, and then spend another 3 hours undoing all the changes you shouldn't have made.
