I have been using Firefox for the past 2 years at least and cannot live without tabbed Browsing.

I have been using this browser in my workplace (government) and was recently told not to.

I realize that I am not supposed to install software without prior approval but I did so anyway.

I know tabbed browsing will be available in IE7 but in the meantime I am stuck with IE 6.

Any other options out there for tabbed browsing? for IE 6?

I know MSN search bar has it but I would need to ask permission to install it.

I can probably use portable firefox on a Thumb drive, but was recently told we cant use our own thumb drive, they would have to buy it for me.

I did mention that none of the computers have floppy drives and that thumb drives are the only way I can save my documents (aside from e-mailing it to myself)

Technically speaking the only thing they are against is the installation of the software, is there a browser that I can use that does not need installation with tabbed browsing capabilities?

Depends...FF has had its share of security issues...

Your admin is a dipsh!t. I'm a desktop support/LAN admin for a large dept in a major healthcare company. Although there are programs I have problems with people installing, Firefox isn't one of them. Hell I encourage people to use it, that way I don't have to spend as much time cleaning spyware off their computer.

I was an admin/tech at a government agency for a few years and would have LOVED to lock down the profiles on people's machines.

Whenever whe looked at someone's desktop it was loaded with spyware and all kinds of BS programs. People just intalled crap without knowing what the hell they were doing.

I realize that you know what you are doing, but likely 90% of your fellow users do not.

Since I was an admin I could do whatever the hell I wanted. Network security was two desks away usually checking out Bass fishing websites. :p

If they want to nit pick I am not allowed to install software without approval.
I am pretty sure that I saw it as being listed as a non approved browser aling with opera.

does netscape have tabbed browsing?

maybe he fears the fact it's open source and it's code is just sitting there waiting for someone to hack it.

with that said, i think you should ask for a reason, just out of curiousity, and report back.

It's just one more piece of software he has to worry about updating when there is a security flaw.

The simplified, the better.

what does this have to do with knowing ANYTHING about computers? its policy, he has to follow the rules no matter what FF fanbois say.

My company(non government) has a policy of not being able to install anything that has not been approved. FireFox has not been approved, amongst various other programs, for whatever reason.

I'm a Systems Admin.

I understand where the OP is coming from, but unfortunately he's not looking at the big picture.

OK, so 1% of our users (yes, I'm being generous) has a clue and can use something other than what we give them to use.

How do we tell those 1% apart from the other 99% who would install FF and god knows what else into their computers, screwing up everything? How would we keep track? Not to mention the whole office politics angle (Joe got to use FF, why can't I use IE7 beta?), etc.

Nope, not gonna deal with it. Everyone is stuck on the same browser. The only people who get to run anything different are fellow systems admins.

Of course, if the CIO walked in and demanded Firefox he'd get it, but for normal clerks and CS reps? Fagetaboutit!
