Yep. I work in IT at a law firm and its just easier to have everyone here on the same page.

all these people saying run it off a flash drive, install anyway, etc..

That's a great way to get fired. I'm sure the IT guy isn't worried about firefox, but if he lets this douche install FF, then the next douche will cry about not being to install XYZ browser full-o-holes.

If it is affecting your job not being able to use firefox then talk to your manager and go that route. - assuming you like your job of course

No he/she is not. We have the same policy for very good business reasons.

Sounds like you know nothing about large Corporate firms, their Intranets, and Active Directory inforced Group Policies (for windows based datacenters).

I realize that I am not supposed to install software without prior approval but I did so anyway.

I know tabbed browsing will be available in IE7 but in the meantime I am stuck with IE 6.

Any other options out there for tabbed browsing? for IE 6?

I know MSN search bar has it but I would need to ask permission to install it.

I can probably use portable firefox on a Thumb drive, but was recently told we cant use our own thumb drive, they would have to buy it for me.

I did mention that none of the computers have floppy drives and that thumb drives are the only way I can save my documents (aside from e-mailing it to myself)

Technically speaking the only thing they are against is the installation of the software, is there a browser that I can use that does not need installation with tabbed browsing capabilities?

PORTABLE FIREFOX FTW!

Mebbe there is some FF skin to make it look like an IE browser, then you can continue using FF.
I use IE now, because FF annoyed me several times.

That's not going to work. He isn't allowed to install anything, not just firefox. Crasybrowser, slimbrowser, MyIE2 etc all require you to install something, which will only get him in trouble.

Using IE isn't *that* bad. Honestly, what do you need to do at work that requires a browser. You're probably just surfing the net.

I'm sure you'll survive.

Cliffs:
The Admin has more reason to prohibit you from using FF than you do for using it. The ignorance that enables someone to think that an Admin is an idiot for prohibiting the use of FF is the same ignorance that the admin is protecting their network from.

Do they have remote desktop installed? If so, RDP into your home computer, read the rules because chances are there's nothing against it.

And how does a skin stop it from being identified again?

On second thought since you like to cry and circumvent the policies (considering a thumbdrive) OP.... I think you should try this method. ;)

I fail to realize how "tabbed browsing" increases work productivity.

I work for a defense contractor.

DO NOT install anything that is not instaleld by your IT department.

if you add tabbed browing, you might as well starting to count the days til lyou are "let go".

It's stupid. You get paid to work for them. Use the tools they want you to use and if it takes more time, so what?

what does this have to do with knowing ANYTHING about computers? its policy, he has to follow the rules no matter what FF fanbois say.

My company(non government) has a policy of not being able to install anything that has not been approved. FireFox has not been approved, amongst various other programs, for whatever reason.

Exactly!

The reason they do know and they will answer you!
They will tell you that they ceritify programs to make sure there are no back doors, security risks, etc. Yes, I know ... IE. Well, guess what. It is in fact a security isssue and the gov and defense contractors will fire you over it, especially if you were already given a warning.

Use "FireFox IE" and he probably won't notice, hahah.

At my mom's work they changed everyone to Netscape (Gecko engine like FireFox).

The problem with you installing FF is that it isn't necessarily more secure than IE, and they can manage patching IE remotely whereas they cannot manage FF. FF is a security risk, plain and simple.
