netgear MR814 not able to handle the load?

when i download at fast speeds from bittorent, my wireless network connection will drop eventually. It says i am still connected, but i cant connect to the router by typing ip address, and the internet stops working. should i upgrade my router?

Also, I emailed netgear, and they told me to lower the mtu to 1000, and that helped a bit, but then i cant access my email from sbc/yahoo

thanks

same issue w/ the router we run . . .

i found some info on it, because bt tries making connections so fast i think it makes the router wig out . . only fix is a hard reset . . gets annoying, only way i've found to somewhat stop it is only run 1 or 2 d/ls at once . .

The router should be able to handle much more than a standard cable or dsl line. I think you need to RMA your router.

I have the same router. It frequently locks up when using almost any file sharing program. I may try a different router to see if it does any better.

Apparently, a lot of routers have problems with file sharing programs. It may have something to do with the large number of connections being made.

My netgear rp614 did the same thing. Then I found a beta firmware on their site and everything is perfect after installing it. See if they've got anything newer for your router...

I'm using firmware 4.14RC2 dated sep 23, 2003

if there is a beta version on their site, how do I find it. I don't see it listed.

by what i understand, quite a few routers can possibly have this kinda issue when using file sharing... i'm now using sharezza and it seems a bit better . . can limit connections a bit easier . .

I've heard the same also. I'd like to know what routers don't have these issues.

I can reduce the risk of the router freezing by lowering connections and so forth, but it also reduces my download speed.

<--- Using D-link 614+ and never had problems. I always downloaded @3Mbs.

*Maybe just a netgear problem?

I've been trying different settings and combinations to see if I could get this router to refrain from locking up with file sharing software. The problem is, the router performs erratically. It went for 6 days without locking up at fairly robust settings, then locks up after an hour or two.

In contrast, a friend has the Microsoft Wireless 802.11b Base Station Router and it just refuses to lock up. I'm going to contact netgear support to see if they have a solution.

I'm suprised that there isn't a listing somewhere showing performance of routers with respect to file sharing.

I just checked the netgear website and they released a new firmware candidate on 2/24. I'll try that upgrade in the meantime, although I am not hopeful.

ok, so this is not a problem w/ me. I've had this problem as well w/ my 814.... damn POS. And now it's getting to the point where it gets an IP.. or at least reports it.. but I can't get any webpage. My friends is having a similar issue....

I had always liked netgear products.. but now.. gotta find a replacement.. ugh... no money 🙁

*Maybe just a netgear problem?

Seems like it, I couldn't imagine a router that couldn't handle a single cable or DSL connection worth of traffic. I've always used Linux firewalls at home and even when I was using a P60 with 24M memory it could handle everything I threw at it.

For your information, the latest firmware 4.14RC2 dated 2/24/2004 doesn't fix this problem.

I've been living with this problem for quite some time now. Basically, if I run file shareing software I'm risking my connection. I often don't do large downloads because I just can't risk losing remote access to my computer when I am away.

It sounds like most other routers do not have such a severe problem. I'm quite suprised that this problem hasn't been covered in more detail. I'd say this is a serious flaw.

a very serious flaw. It really bites because I used to recommend netgear to my friends... word of mouth is powerful, and I'm dropping netgear off my list for now (and to add, i *DID* contact tech support regarding this, but they kept saying try the latest firmware).

i'm also very dissapointed with netgear. i've had the same experience with tech support. this router is basically useless for filesharing. it also doesn't have loopback support, which is a standard feature for most routers these days.

i'm pretty much going to drop it and try my hand at a linux distro 🙂 mainly because i also need to learn linux and firewall setups and security...

Loopback is the ability for a router to resovle a WAN (Internet) IP address to a LAN IP address.

Loopback allows a first machine in your LAN running a server to be accessed by a second machine on your LAN using an Internet IP address.

I think I've found a good replacement, the Linksys WRT54G.

It's a linux based router that has customizable firmware written for it.
Basically, because Linksys used Linux as part of the firmware they were required to release the source code under the GPL. This has allowed people to make some pretty amazing improvements to the firmware.

It seems to support everything you need. And, if you are a fancy schmanzy programmer, you can modify the firmware.

yeah, that's what I was going to go for too, if i don't do the linux route (this *is* for home, and should I go, no one would be able to work w/ the linux box 🙂)

I do have an old laptop I could throw linux on and use as a router. it's so old that it only has a 700 mb hard drive. I don't even think it has usb support.

i'll look around and see if there are any deals on the linksys router.

Hello again everyone!

I went the linksys WRT54G router and I am quite pleased. I have my file sharing at full throttle now and there are no problems. What a difference! Additionally, everything seems much faster.

I installed the firmware from http://www.sveasoft.com/forum6.htm and it's wonderful.
