so odd that Disney would remove their IP from the market with little to no warning, making it completely unavailable to the consumer.

It's almost like, that is something they have never done.

odd.

I know that Lion King 3D is playing in theaters for 2 weeks only. If I want to see it in the movie theater I better go soon. They may extend it but I know it is for 2 weeks only or Disney does that this movie goes back in the vault BS with their DVD/Blu Ray crap.

Anyway, Netflix used to have a wait to be added to instant queue list when movies/shows are removed from the instant queue/streaming. They have removed that list because the list was getting pretty long on the content that were removed from the instant queue/streaming availability. I used to be a big fan of Netflix and recommend them to all my friends/family. No more.

If you use the iPad app they showcase the best content on top. Go to the Action category and the first three are promising then...

Can you defend that assortment with a straight face? Seriously?

What I cannot defend is the Netflix community rankings of 4/5 starts to The Expendables. LOL.

Anyways, it all boils down to personal preference.

I pretty much own what I want to watch on DVD or Blu-Ray. If I want to see a new release I usually buy it. What I have been using Netflix for is catching up on old seasons of TV shows but I (personally) find the content lacking and choose network streaming Apps over Netflix.

Most are value-add like Amazon Prime, Xfinity, HBO GO.

uh, none of those are free, either. like you said--value-add.

cost of entry for Netflix streaming is still cheaper than those.

eh, Amazon prime is cheaper at $90/annual, but I honestly hope you aren't comparing the content of Netflix and Amazon streaming.

as I understand it, those ranking that they show are tied to your own personal order history and your own habit of ranking--it is Netflix's own algorithm for suggesting quality to the individual user. So, it's how Netflix thinks you will rank it.

For me, The Expendables shows a 2.5 star ranking, lol.

this further colors the types of films that Dwell is demanding on Netflix. ;)

Eh, that's from a trial account I opened last week to do a report on streaming for work. I only skimmed about five titles. Don't know how it got those star ratings (if that's how it works), but they seem to be defaults. Says "member average" in the UI:

I figured out motion man's angle, basically he's hoping that reed hastings on the off chance reads this forum, and might hire him for the impending law suit from share holders, so that he can move back to the bay area so he can cheer for the 49ers. The others are a bit harder to read, but I'm working on it...

You forgot to mention that I was at The Catch.

How about the people who hate the Netflix selection list some of their favorite movies of all time, and of this year

ah, yeah. if that's the case then it would be the average user rating.

I think you have to take the time to start entering preferred genre, categories and start ranking individual movies for the suggested ratings to kick in.

at first, I thought it was crap--simple connections like by actor or "type" were always very bad for me.

say, I rank Magnolia 5 stars because it is indeed a fucking amazing film, they then suggest all these Tom Cruise movies, despite the fact that he is horrid, the vast majority of his films are horrid, and that he was the undisputed worst thing about Magnolia. :p It has gotten much better, though.

I'll have to log into my old account that was active on and off from 2002 - 2011 to see what kind of recommendation it gives me. I have a pretty shitty taste in movies and my wife's is worse :D

My netflix recommendations were generally decent. I didn't want to watch about half of what it suggested but did want to see the other half. I did rate pretty regularly so that probably helped.

I cancelled netflix during the separation of services, but might resume disc service with qwick...whatever if the game + blu ray price is reasonably enough.

Netflix is only really good for the TV shows. I can't remember the last time I watched a movie on netflix streaming but I do watch TV shows on it often. Amazon seems to be catching up with their streaming service in that regard so I may dump the streaming from Netflix. Amazon streaming also is getting onto more devices now. If it ever gets on my phone, that will probably be the last day for netflix for me. I still like the DVD by mail service as it's still an amazing selection of movies that you can't find at Redbox or on any streaming service.

I just don't how Netflix can justify such a price increase for streaming only when they are actually loosing good content.

netflix predicts 2.5 stars for The Expendables, for me.

I'm not a big fan of action/adventure but I can find a ton of stuff to watch.

Suggestions for me; These are all supposed to be quite good. Sure, mostly old, but I haven't seen them:

Hud
Sin Nombre
The Man From Nowhere
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
High Noon
Enter the Dragon
Bonnie and Clyde
Zulu
Stagecoach
The Train
Destry Rides Again
Rockers
The Twilight Samurai

That's just Netflix guessing what I'll like personally. If I go deeper there is plenty more. In total, 22 films that Netflix thinks I'll rate above a 4, and I'm very stingy with giving out 5 stars. And this is a category I don't really enjoy. If you've seen everything they have, well, idk what to tell ya

FYI netflix (NFLX) is up about 2% at the moment from yesterday. I wonder if they will finish up.

First off, I like the streaming content. It has a good selection of older content, but you won't get a lot of the newest movies and TV shows.

Currently watching Dexter, just watched Psych. Neither of which have the newest seasons on streaming. Lets add Royal Pains, The office, Bones, Castle, White Collar, Burn Notice, The Wire. Nada.

Many of the new movie releases that come out are not available to stream.

I can honestly say that if I had to chose between streaming and DVDs, DVDs win because I can see everything old and new.

I wish Amazon Prime streaming was integrated into Windows Media Center.

I have Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus and Netflix. Though to be honest I haven't even opened the Hulu Plus app in several months.

It's a network/studio-specific contract.

comparatively, Showtime is rather generous with their licensing--even just allowing up to 2 seasons of some of their shows is remarkable. You do, now, get all but the most recent season of Weeds--which is worth the watch.

HBO will never license their content to anyone but their own service. It sucks, yes, but only HBO will have that, so they simply aren't part of the equation.

Netflix has a lot of awesome British shows, too, that few of us over here are normally exposed to.

The new Sherlock series (only 3 episodes right now, but each is 1.5 hours, so ...3 movies) and Luther are both excellent.

and I watched 13 Assassins last night.

epic.

For the record, the Expendibles is closer to 2.2 stars for me--if that little sliver of red on the 3rd star is to be interpreted that way, lol.

I'll probably still watch (some of) it.

Just changed my Netflix subscription to stream only. Depending on where they go with it, I could see myself cancelling within the next year.

Netflix is not doing this for the right now. They are spinning off Qwikster to continue their DVD/Bluray rentals But they are keeping the big name (netflix) with the company they know will succeed in the LONG run. Not now. But 5-10 years from now. They are planning ahead.

They may not be around 5 - 10 years from now, at the rate they are going. It's a case of a company jumping the gun before the market was ready.
