Netflix Increasing the Price on Blu-Ray Rental Subscriptions

I may drop Blu-Ray access over this. I was fine paying $1 per month, but in light of the fact that in the last 12 days I've had 7 of 8 Blu-Ray's show up cracked (multiple replacements of the same 2 movies), I'm a bit pissed. I complained and was given 1 extra movie....big deal...I've been deprived of my service for 12 days. Fuck them, and their 300% increase.

I'd be willing to consider keeping it if they'd get off their ass and fix the well-known issues with Blu-Rays and their flimsy envelopes.

It's not the $1 per month increase that peeved me off, it's that this is the second time that they've jacked up their rates in less than a year.

Come on... even the cable company is usually smart enough not to jack up their prices more than on an annual basis. People notice this kind of stuff, especially during a time when they're trying to save more.

So you're just now figuring out that the market will set the price based on supply and demand?

Still better than the policies blockbuster has put into place(in store exchanges count against shipped out movies, shorter store hours).

when was this official?
i noticed it happened about 2 weeks ago.

I found out about it a couple weeks ago myself. I cancelled last week.

gonna cancel my BD add on, but keep the basic service. I love the watch it now, and look forward to the online only service.

oh well, don't use bluray rental anyway. streaming ftw.

Streaming FTL. If I wanted to watch poor quality versions of films I would just torrent them. I'm paying for quality.

a) this is legal. torrenting, regardless of how anyone feels the studios/mpaa are, is not (well, most tv shows).

b) I was more commenting on HD streaming. It looks pretty damn good to me. but then again, my expectations are not bluray quality for it. And as you cut out of my quote, it has it's issues.. mainly netflix keeping up with bandwidth or alternatively letting us just download stuff into a 4 hour buffer or something rather than auto-selection piss poor quality because of a lousy connection.

I find the streaming quality to be very good.. I have had problems using the browser plugin on PC, but on the 360s it seems to work flawlessly. As for PQ, it matches up about evenly with comcast HD, and the SD actually looks a bit better on Netflix.

Blu ray prices are going down and netflix's prices go up. Makes perfect sense. Oh wait, it makes the opposite of sense.

I don't think netflix buys the blueray dvds at your local best buy. They have agreements with the movie studios.

Exactly. Netflix is a hell of a deal, especially if you go unlimited, 1,2, or 3 at a time. Another dollar or two for BD is absolutely fair imo.

My Blu-ray access was going from $1 to $5 a month. I decided to remove it - I don't need Blu-ray rentals that badly. If I like a film enough to care if it's in HD or not, I'll probably purchase a copy anyway.

Then continue to pay. Some people don't think it's worth it and will drop it. Others won't. I'd prefer that they give you the choice to pay for what you want than try and do a one size fits all deal.

How is it BS? You're only paying a whole freaking dollar extra a month for much better quality and selection. Why do people think they are entitled to unlimited high quality entertainment for little to no cost?

It's a service and it is a 10% increase on that service.

Actually, if you think that Blu-Ray is only a buck extra (on top of the "basic" DVD subscription), they're doubling or (for me) tripling the price.

The charge for monthly Blu-ray access on your 2 DVDs at-a-time (Unlimited) plan will increase from $1 a month to $3 a month. The price of your 2 DVDs at-a-time (Unlimited) plan is not changing and remains at $13.99 a month.

Hmm...looked up Blockbuster. They want $16.99 for 2 DVDs at a time. Guess they're tied with Netflix.

My last two Blu-Rays from Netflix skipped. "Meet the Robinsons" skipped about a minute, and "Happily N'ever After" skipped about 40 seconds. Does Blockbuster have the same problem?

No problem, I'll just switch from 3 at a time to 2 at a time. I usually just watch one movie in a night anyways.

Well, at least the Watch It Now streaming selection is getting better. They just added the first 9 seasons of South Park today.

AWESOME SAUCE.

Those have been free online for awhile...

Yes, I know. Now I can watch them on my TV though.

This fee does not guarantee that I will receive BDs in a timely fashion. I could conceivably go an entire month and not see a single BD but pay the fee. That doesn't make any sense.

Furthermore, they just added the $1 fee 5 months ago and now it's multiplying substantially. That tells me this is a money grab. Dropped BD access immediately.

Netflix is all about being unlimited (even if it's not really unlimited). Pay per use doesn't fit with Netflix.

The cost seems appropriate when you consider the cost of buying Blu-Ray discs vs the cost of buying DVDs. I too dropped Blu-ray access though, because I mostly use streaming now.

I didn't ask for pay per use so I'm confused by your response. Netflix is not guaranteeing improved BD service with this fee increase. I wouldn't complain about the increase if there was going to be a tangible improvement of service.

Nothing has changed with BD in 5 months. The largest cost for Netflix is shipping and I don't think it's more expensive to ship a BD.
