I'm confused (a perfectly normal condition for me). I was listening to the radio today and the topic was net neutrality. There were people both for and against, and both sides had very reasonable logical arguments. I find my self in complete agreement with both sides. Obviously that doesn't work, so just as obviously I don't understand the subject at all (another reasonably normal condition for me).
Could someone give me the straight story in one paragraph please. It will save me hours of googeling.

Do you want to be able to just go online and do whatever you want to do without additional cost or do you want to pay for your internet like you do your tv? Special plans for sports sites, streaming movies, news etc... to avoid having your speeds throttled? If the former you want neutrality. The latter you’re the devil.
 
When the corporations claim to be for net neutrality...it does give you pause about if you are understanding it correctly. I'm actually surprised the senate reversed it.

Corporations could do evil stuff so lets have the government make up rules and implement a lumbering bureaucracy. That will surely end well.

I'll remind you these people hired the Awan family to do their IT, they are in no position to make choices one way or another on tech.

Really the Awan family did the IT for the FCC during the Obama years? As for the rest have you paid attention to how AT&T and Comcast conduct their businesses? There are also a very limited number of markets with substantial competition in this space so it isn't like consumers have much in the way of choice. You MIGHT have an argument if there was real competition but there isn't so yeah.
 
Net neutrality prevents Internet Service Providers like AT&T, Comcast and Verizon from interfering with internet traffic and favoring their own sites, apps and services. Removing net neutrality would allow these large corps to charge more money and make more profits at the expense of consumers.
 
This is what I thought it was all about, tired speed and packaged services. The proponents claim it's nothing of the sort, that there will be no throttling, that this just allows some sights to pay more for faster service. Obviously someone isn't being honest.
I guess were going to find out.
 
The basic way to look at it is the telcos are losing subscribers to TV services due to the availability of online streaming services. So they are getting your money for internet but they also want your money for the TV services you aren't paying them for by cutting the cord.

There’s nothing in the big telcos position that is anything but self serving to their bottom line.

The former telecom worker part of me wants to point out that $30 is lower than the average rate in the US and the maximum $80 is closer to what we all currently pay on average.
There are some upsides to ending net neutrality but there are also huge risks.

It will take a while but someone will figure out a way to offer super cheap service with shit tons of add on’s.
Also I suspect you’d be pretty pissed if your favorite news site got blocked or slowed to an unusable speed.

Well just realize they don’t have to throttle you to effectively throttle you.

They just leave your current speed as it is and in a few years when streaming is all 4K and websites require 40% more bandwidth your circa 2018 speeds are going to be slow.

Comcast is already doing this by not throttling but offering ‘free’ speed upgrades if you buy their tv service. You can stream at full speed (assuming your streaming service also pays Comcast), as long as Comcast gets a cut for their service.

I pay my ISP to connect me to the internet not because I want to connect to them. The end of net neutrality lets my ISP take my money and then sell me to the content providers.

Netflix you want access to our product excuse me customers? Pay us $$.

Netflix to its subscribers- due to paying ISPs our costs have gone up. You now pay $$ per month.

Brand new Netflix competitor- oh you want access to our customers at the same speed Netflix gets?. Pay us $$$ otherwise we’ll connect you at our base speed of 1mbs. Can’t afford that? That’s too bad.

The simply answer is that it did, that is why we got Net Neutrality in the first place. The concept of Net Neutrality did not come about in a vacuum. As the few cable ISPs gained power and control of the market over the many dial-up ISPs they replaced they started to do this sort of thing, but was quickly shut down by the government.

I'm not challenging. I'm honestly on the fence about this issue because it always seemed to me to be fixing what ain't broke.

It’s a tricky question. Boils down to this to me.
No net neutrality will equal lower rates for internet, especially if you don’t use much. If you use a lot or stream it will equal higher rates for either the streaming service or some kind of extra charge from Hulu or whatever service.

On the business end it’s not unreasonable for carriers to monitor their networks but that can also get twisted pretty fast with blocking certain content.

This is truely no answer is prefect type problem
