In this Sunday's flyer (12-15), CompUSA has nero Burning Rom 5.5 for:

$79.99 - $40 IR - $20 (Mfg MIR) = $19.99 (plus tax)

This is the retail version, not the often posted OEM versions that are burner specific.

If you wait- you can probably find a burner that has Nero 5.5 included for $20 after MIR.

You guys are right about the $20 burners...

But, the way I've been upgrading burners the past year-and-a-half (mostly because of deals I've found here at AT -- thanks), it has been real nice to have the retail version of nero installed. Just keep changing the burners and ditch whatever software it comes with.

Yeah, one of the things that'll decide what burner I purchase will be if it includes NERO...

this still a good deal -- provided the rebate comes
not everybody has a legal version of nero
also, the box probably comes with a MANUAL, unlike the downloaded or bundled versions (that i've seen)
"This is the retail version, not the often posted OEM versions that are burner specific."
that's right, the version with the 32x benq i bought was only for that (or benq branded?) drive.
that dr $19.9x ar (benq?) drive probably has the same...
keep posting!

Notably, the retail version of NERO v5.5 includes the capability to burn DVDs, which many OEM copies of NERO won't do.

I got a Buslink (LiteOn) 48x24x48x CDRW from BB last week for $16 inc. tax, after rebates and 10% Maxim coupon. It has a copy of Nero with it. Sometimes I feel sad for these companies. There you have Buslink, LiteOn, Ahead (Nero), BestBuy, AND the state, all sharing 16 bucks... for a great piece of kit.

$16? Heck I had to pay $20.
Seriously, Don't feel bad, only about 20-25% of the rebates get redeemed.
Even if nero gets $5 a copy, multiply that by millions of copies and you have some serious money. All run by a company that only needs a handful of software developers and little management. The production they can farm out.

You say... for a $60 product with $40 in rebates, only 20-25% of the rebates get claimed? I would be very surprised if that was the case, seeing as most people buy the things because of the rebate.

I've been looking around for that, but many of the new burners only come with the Nero Express version, not the full version that allows you to burn DVD's among other things. But I guess if vanilla-flavored CD-R burning is all you need then getting it through a package will make more sense. Just my $.02.

I'm in for this one for the sole reason that my prize burner didn't come with Nero but Easy CD Creator instead. Every re-branded Lite-on burner that I've installed on my family's PC's came with Nero over the last year came with Nero...it's the best. In August, I bought a Plextor 40/12/40a for my own PC and was disappointed it came with Easy CD.

Only complaint about Nero is that the MP3 encoder is a limited trial version, 30 copies I think. Then, they want to pop you another $20 for the full "plug-in". Is this really SW that is downloaded or do they simply supply a serial number/password to enable the feature? If that is what it is, hope someone wouldn't mind pm'ing me the serial number.

There are a lot of free mp3 encoders out there. Razorlame, cdx, EAC....

I highly recommend Easy CD-DA Extractor. One of the fastest encoders I've ever used, and an incredibly array of file formats supported. You can get it at www.poikosoft.com. Cost is around $20 for free lifetime updates. Well worth it.

As for the person asking for the serial #: Why shouldn't you have to pay for your own software?

Yeah, I know. Have used CDEX (Lame) which is good but kinda slow and also RealPlayer (Xing, I think), fast but not so good. The encoder that Nero distributes is the Frauhofer which is considered the best by some. I'm transferring an entire CD library (approx. 900 CD's) to a media server so may as well do it right. It just seems to me that Nero should be including this with the retail package. It is really a hidden gotcha. On the front of the box, big bold letters proclaim MP3 support and on the back major play is given to encoding and playing MP3's. It's only when you read the very very small print, sandwiched in between features, does Nero disclose that the encoder works for upto 30 selections, and the full encoder is "available at their web-site, no where mentioning that it is another $20...that's my complaint.

A perfectly valid question. I was only resorting to bummin' because I am so broke from buying all the hot deals that appear on this forum

If you're converting everything, buy CD-DA Extractor (I linked above). I used it to convert my library. Lots of built-in features to speed you along, and really, it's very, very fast.

It's also worth buying/borrowing a drive that has very high DAE speeds. Makes a huge difference when you're dealing with 100's of CDs.

Why don't you sell some of those 900 cds in order to pay for it?

My primary CD drive is a Plextor UltraPlex 40X SCSI. It does a pretty good job.;)

These Nero special buys keep popping up but the OEM version is still "dirtcheap" with no rebate at DirtCheapSoftware. I got mine a couple of months back...it's $12.95 or some such plus shipping. Anyway, no rebate required. .

I don't know about this retail vs. OEM thing, but this is NOT a specific one-brand machine OEM. It's a one-size-fits-all, and is immediately upgradeable via the Nero website to the latest iteration of the Nero software.

I recently got the LiteOn 40x burner for my home system and it too came with Nero. Probably the best burning program I've used.
However, it wouldn't install on a different machine (my machine at work). Said the software was oem, etc burner specific.
For about fiddy bucks you can get a nice 40x LiteOn with Nero at newegg. Definitely a great value. Anyway, just my 2 cents...
