One thing I have not seen mentioned is the advertised capability of the full version to burn to 2 burners at once.
Has anyone used this feature ?

"These Nero special buys keep popping up but the OEM version is still "dirtcheap" with no rebate at DirtCheapSoftware. I got mine a couple of months back...it's $12.95 or some such plus shipping. Anyway, no rebate required. .
I don't know about this retail vs. OEM thing, but this is NOT a specific one-brand machine OEM. It's a one-size-fits-all, and is immediately upgradeable via the Nero website to the latest iteration of the Nero software."
did it come with a manual? and what's the shipping? how long did take? what are their reseller ratings? come on man...

Yo Unclebud, I take it you're kidding. Otherwise, go to the site I linked to for your information. You got questions, they got answers. Manual not included, but an electronic version is on the disc. Otherwise, the Nero site's got manual downloads.

so it's clear, i'm saying that a lot of people ask questions that are in themself not silly, but the fact that IF THEY HAD READ THE MANUAL BEFOREHAND
, they wouldn't have asked them.
a program as powerful as nero needs a PRINTED MANUAL to TRULY get the most out of it
acrobat reader/display help is a resource hog for one [imo]
and for another, i find i'm able to glean much more info from a book beside me than toggling windows and reducing resources further
was someone saying his deal was better? i'm saying it's not. if he was posting an ALTERNATIVE, then i withdraw part of my comments...

If it's that much trouble, why not just print out the manual? Is it worth $20 to you to have them give you a nice bound manual with a pretty cover on it?

what $20? the one that's for the rebate? for $19.99ar it is -- especially when using a machine that doesn't do double-side... why print out MY paper when i can buy one FOR THE SAME PRICE(ar)? not to mention potential resale value...

<shrugs shoulders> To each his own. Burners aren't -that- complicated, and I'd rather use the online documentation than shell out $40 (tying up $20 in a rebate) for the retail version. And what do you suppose the resale value is going to be, when it comes bundled with half the burners out there already?

So this Nero from DirtCheapSoftware isn't burner specific? Interesting... how can you tell which OEM copies are burner specific or not then? Anyways... still debating whether to head over to compusa to pick up a copy for $20 or just get that OEM copy for cheaper... any one have any luck with Nero from DirtCheapSoftware working with a Sony drive?

How burner specific are these OEM copies of Nero when the same 'brand' and model of burner ( Cendyne or whatever ) actually has several different kinds of burner in the box (Lite-On, etc.)? Do they bother to have a different type of Nero with each type of burner? I've noticed the manuals that come with the drives and software mention entering a number when installing the Nero - none of the drives or paperwork have any appropriate looking number with them, but Nero works anyway. These are mostly the standard cheap-o brands: Cendyne, IOMagic, etc. Could I actually upgrade these from Nero's website? Should there actually be a serial number included with the drives? All came from large stores [not Fry's] and were new in shrinkwrapped boxes.

(will deal with other post later maybe) i have two pine 32x benq 4210a that came with nero 5.5.71 or something
no serial number, just the disc
installed it on compaq with 12x lite-on
look at the drive in properties (within nero's menus), "no" sign over the drive. start to burn -- nero says "this version of nero will not work with the installed drive" or something like that
uninstall
go get another of my pine 32x with sanyo bp1600, grab the nero with the serial number (5.5), install
input the serial number
no problems
takes the upgrades also :)

Dirtcheap Software's Nero OEM's come with serial. Again, they are NOT machine-specific. Now, if I installed a second burner on this machine, would it work with that, too? Who knows, but I don't need a second burner.

As far as the manual goes, me thinks you doth protest too much. OEM's are for people who don't require printed manuals. Or for people who know where they can find out what they need to know in lieu of a printed manual. If you don't find yourself in either of those categories, I suggest you pay the extra $$$ for your manual in the retail version.

RE:"How burner specific are these OEM copies of Nero when the same 'brand' and model of burner "

Been my experience that they are brand specific...NOT model. I've gotten the same TDK version of Nero to work on 8x, 12x, 16x, 24x and 32x TDK burners for example.

Look, I don't see what the hub bub is about with the Nero OEM from DirtCheap. Nowhere on the site does it say it's for TDK, or SONY, or Lite-On, or Plextor...get the picture? I have a Samsung 32X and it installed and runs without problem. Now, did I just get lucky and get the Samsung version of Nero's OEM? Hardly likely. This is not a "bundled" version of software. It's an OEM version. In my mind, that means that pc manufacturers can pick and choose the components they want to install and use this version of Nero to satisfy their needs.

Now, if, for some reason, it doesn't install/run, just email DirtCheap and tell them it doesn't work. But again, they don't specify anywhere that it is for specific brands. The biggest difference I can see in the OEM price is that it comes as a disc only with a paper sleeve. On the sleeve is a label with the serial. No packaging, no manual. No fancy colors.

It shouldn't be any problem whatsoever. If it is, I'm sure these guys will refund your money. Or email or call them and ask them if there's any restrictions on brand before you buy. If I'm wrong, I'll gladly stand corrected, although it's harder to type that way.

whatever. taking small comfort in the knowledge that one of the above posters will be moaning and crying about some issue that would have been easily solved if he HAD READ THE MANUAL. and best BET that i am gonna link to this thread when he/she/they do. just waiting...

I bought this yesterday. Here's what was included with the retail package (v5.5):

Nero ROM - burn CDs or DVDs
Nero MediaPlayer - like winamp or wmp
Nero Cover Designer (and starter kit, including label press & instructions)
Nero Wave Editor - edit/record audio files
NeroVision Express - video authoring software
NeroExpress
Manual (I just paged through & it looks like it's only for the burning ROM software, not everything else)

If you've burned CDs before, the manual is mostly useless (although it's huge & covers 5 languages). Some of the software above may not be included in the OEM version. There was a flyer in the box that says the NeroExpress and Vision Express are new/last minute additions to the package. Nevertheless, I otherwise feel OK with my $20 investment.

One more thing - it does say that it can handle 2 recorders simultaneously (it's printed on the front of the box), and also included Nero Toolkit (Nero CD Speed and Nero Drive Speed to check and adjust drive speeds).

Just got my Nero 5.5 in the mail from DirtCheapSoftware.

Installed perfectly with my Sony 8x4x32 CDRW, and updated to the lastest 5.5.10.0 version no sweat.

Only thing I noticed, was this was Nero Express... I mean it can burn all sorts of different types of CDs, ect.. different modes, and even can do DVD-R, DVD-RW, ect ... and comes with a few extra programs, like InCD for CDRWs, and a program for some video editing and capturing.

Slikkster, when you ordered your Nero, was it the express version too?

Also, anyone know the main differences between Nero and Nero Express? I mean this express is extremely easy to use, just doesn't seem like there all the same options as regular Nero, but I'm not sure I could even use those anyways.

Cheers.

I believe Nero Express is just a front end to Nero. It makes Nero easier to use without worrying about any settings. I have the full version of Nero with mp3 and the express is a free download and just adds itself to Nero.

A few months ago bought an 'OEM' version of NERO 5.5.x.x that came with a registration number from one of the lower priced places found on pricewatch for ~$10. Didn't open the package. Downloaded latest DEMO version from the Nero site, then unlocked it into the full version with the registration number that came with my older 5.5 version. Works great. Best of all - it was one simple purchase with no rebate hassle.

Has anyone else used "Express" It came with a cendyne I bought and gave to a friend. He made it sound like a stripped down version. Can it do everything regular Nero can?

So far my impressions are that Nero Express can do everything same as regular Nero.

When I start Express, I'm presented with these different options for different discs to create:

- Data CD: data disc, bootable disc
- Music: audio, audio & data, mp3, wma
- Videos/Pictures: vcd, svcd
- Copy Disc
- Record from Disc Image

Also still have a bunch of options to set for config, most of which are the same as regular Nero, like buffer size, overburn, ect...

Also just found a cover designer too with it.

It seems to work just fine for me. I thought I needed the full version but this one is easier to make the CDs with what seems to be all the same options that I would use any (maybe some of the super advanced stuff is gone, but there are some advanced features).

I really wish there was a break down of the differences between the two. But hey for $12, it was a great buy :)
