While pulling out of my garage this afternoon i happened to notice a dark shadow on my neighbor's fence , and since i am nearsighted i got out to take a closer look at what the shadow was and it was the neighbor's dog hanging from a chain around its neck , it was dead. I don't know how long it had hung there, but after i went to get the dog's owner he told me he had chained it up earlier that morning to prevent it from jumping over the fence. Needless to say he gave the dog to much free chain. A real shame considering how preventable this was.

No cure for stupid I guess. I know I'd catch this, but I know my wife is to stupid to th8ink about things like this. 1+1=3 quite often unfortunately.

Ain't it the truth.

I saw that once... not a pretty sight. Dog was yelping half the night and when we and the neighbors woke up the next morning we saw another neighbor's dog hanging over a fence...

i remember years ago i came back from somewhere and heard this weird ass noise in the house, like osmeone actually screaming the words "help". i walked into the kitchen and saw my cat hanging from ths collar on a knob for a door on the counter and immediately lifted her off of it. she was basically choking on there. i have no idea how long she was on there hanging, but it was kind of freaky because it literally sounded like she was screaming the words "help" and was a sound I won't forget.

Cats can talk when under duress. Its one of their racial talents.

I think the owner just took it for granted the dog would know better, just like he, or you or i would. Sort of anthropomorphism so to speak.

This is why dog owners should be held criminally responsible when they cause death or injuries. :|

Sounds like the dog was either too stupid or hyper to live.

To tell you the truth I'd be a little concerned if you did actually take pics.;)

I had a siamese cat who managed to hang herself from some mini-blinds in our bedroom. She must have been trying to climb through them to sit on the window sill and got her collar caught in one of the chords that run through the middle of the blinds. We came home and found the cat without the collar in fine shape but the collar was still caught up in the blinds which were messed up and had a bit of blood on them. I guess the cat was in a life or death struggle with the blinds...the cat won fortunately.

I'm sure she was talking up a storm. ;) Too bad she's gone now...she lived a long life with us though.

There is nothing anthropomorphic about it. Most animals know how to preserve their own lives. It's a basic instinct.

You need to let the owner know that.

All dogs are dumb...I think, as a dog owner, you have to assume that if the leash is long enough the dog will manage to get over the fence eventually...even if you don't think it's possible.

In fact, I would argue that the smarter dogs are the ones that will figure out how to get over the fence.

Most dogs are fairly smart, much smarter than cats.

You'll often find dogs as service animals, while training a cat is much like training a mouse or a rabbit.

People are often fooled into thinking that their cat is thinking because it stares into your eyes. But it's more of a "I've been looking at you for 25 seconds and I still have no idea what's going on" stare.

Also, my friend had a german sheppard/lab mix, and it would routinely bring "gifts" to him. Usually the gifts were cats that he killed in the yard. You'd think if a cat was smart, it wouldn't venture into the yard containing a dog. But no, they did.

Then why did the dog hang itself if it knew better?

I guess for the same reason that mice get caught in mousetraps. They don't alwyas know better. Remember- I said "most", not "all".

(I would be willing to bet, though, that smarter mice manage to take the cheese without getting caught, while the mice that get caught aren't quite as smart)

Hey dogs are smart, don't get me wrong, but i just don't think there is any way that dog knew he could kill himself by jumping the fence with a chain around his neck. But then again, who knows what that dog was thinking

If your dog came after me in an aggressive manner when it's not on your property, I'd do the same thing. And if you came after me, you'd fare worse than the dog.

If you've got a gun to my head after breaking and entering my property for no reason and my dog bites your crotch(as I've trained him to do with all perps), and you shoot my dog, you'd better hope I don't get a hold of my gun.

b!tch, are you retarded?

I'm not on the side of cats or dogs here, but the fact that the dog brings home a dead cat doesn't mean the cat is dumb...it just means the dog is bigger.

So the dog had too much chain, had enough chain to hop over the fence but not enough to make it completely to the other side?

I feel for the owner, but I hate dogs that are owned by people roaming freely in the streets. Especially dogs which like to try to escape to the outside world. When I use to live in my old neighborhood, my neighbor got a pitbull that would hop the fence from the car hood. It use to chase the kids in the streets away when they played ball and stuff. Fast forward a few years, I'm being dropped off by friend after a Boyscout meeting and the dog comes out of nowhere and chases me. I ran about 4 steps, realized running is the wrong action to take, turned around and punted the dog a good 5-7 ft to the left with a sweeping side kick.

Keep your dog in your yard. If it tries to escape, then what happens to the dog is fair game.

It is a pitbull, he did have the right. Big, potentially dangerous dog comes at me, I'm not going to take it the chance. Now granted if it was wagging its tail, looked happy, didn't do anything threatening, that is a different story. I think pitbull and I think aggressive and barking and even though I myself am a big dog person, I'm not getting bit.
