Still have my 920 D0 @ 4GHz in my main system. This is by far the longest i have kept a CPU so far and im planing to keep it for the rest of 2012.

mmm been on a 990X @ 4.4ghz for ages now.

i honestly dont see myself upgrading anytime soon until haswell comes out with a 10c/20t.

:T

I have a 2600K which does 4.6ghz... yet i rarely touch that box.
Im just massively greedy when it comes to cores.

No doubt!

I wonder if haswell will finally bring 8 cores into the desktop space.

I find directcanada does.

then I pricematch it at NCIX for the same day shipping. :)

My opinion, I wouldn't have spent a dime if you had a 920. You honestly won't feel the difference unless Benchmarking, which sadly...is benchmarking. Would have saved you $450.00.

Continue.

lol you need to read more of the thread.

I encode video's and run VM's on the machine the extra cores were needed.

I already have a buyer lined up for the D0 at $200 so the cost to me was only $250.

I used NCIX before but they are out west and i'm in ontario so sometimes I prefer local pickup.

Direct canada i've been on the site but never bought anything from them so I will keep an eye on them for now.

I sold my 920 C0 + Asus P6T Deluxe for $350 last November when I built my 2011 system. I had that system for three years and it was ROCK solid. Amazing performance and value. If I wasn't needing more cores for VMs, the 920 @ 3.8 was great for pretty much everything. I just needed more cores and RAM and had the itch for a new build. :D

Was a bit iffy wtih your choice of upgrade until I saw your rationale, and now I agree it makes sense.

Unfortunately, I never got into Nehalem. I was sitting on an E8400 Wolfdale and when Nehalem came out, some unexpected expenses did too, so it broke my chain of upgrading every year.

Even more unfortunately, the chain is still broken, and I missed out on Westmere and SB as well...sigh. Hoping to get back in the game with IVB.

If you are this far in the game you may be better off just waiting for haswell.

If it has Q1 launch in 2013 better to jump on the tock than the tick if you ask me.

So i've just picked up the last two pieces of hardware for this rig until Haswell. And will be totally skipping SB and Ivy.

Picked up a brand new Seal in box i7 970 for $450 on the weekend and I purchased a second Intel 160 G2 SSD to go Raid 0 when the Rst 11.5 drivers are released. This looks to be the second rig i've build that i've managed to keep good performance 3+ years with just minor upgrades and new videocards.

$450 i7 970 is in no way a "minor upgrade".

$200 for a used i7-920? What.

yes if you search craiglist, kijiji etc

920 D0 used are going in the $150-$200 range and i'm not surprised still a great performing chip considering its age.

If I didn't get a good deal on this whole situation I would have stayed on it until haswell.

$150 I completely understand but I would not pay $200 for a used 920. 2500K that costs only a few bucks more just performs clearly better (even in heavily multithreaded apps), overclocks better and uses less power. Not to mention chipset advantages, IGP etc.

I hope I can still get a decent amount of cash for mine when I sell it come Haswell. It's probably going to dwindle down to $100 or even less :(

I may get to play with both also. Think i'm going to build an Ivy based rig for my mom. She is on a older AM2 system I believe.
