mmm been on a 990X @ 4.4ghz for ages now.
i honestly dont see myself upgrading anytime soon until haswell comes out with a 10c/20t.
:T
I have a 2600K which does 4.6ghz... yet i rarely touch that box.
Im just massively greedy when it comes to cores.
I find directcanada does.
then I pricematch it at NCIX for the same day shipping.
My opinion, I wouldn't have spent a dime if you had a 920. You honestly won't feel the difference unless Benchmarking, which sadly...is benchmarking. Would have saved you $450.00.
Continue.
Was a bit iffy wtih your choice of upgrade until I saw your rationale, and now I agree it makes sense.
Unfortunately, I never got into Nehalem. I was sitting on an E8400 Wolfdale and when Nehalem came out, some unexpected expenses did too, so it broke my chain of upgrading every year.
Even more unfortunately, the chain is still broken, and I missed out on Westmere and SB as well...sigh. Hoping to get back in the game with IVB.
So i've just picked up the last two pieces of hardware for this rig until Haswell. And will be totally skipping SB and Ivy.
Picked up a brand new Seal in box i7 970 for $450 on the weekend and I purchased a second Intel 160 G2 SSD to go Raid 0 when the Rst 11.5 drivers are released. This looks to be the second rig i've build that i've managed to keep good performance 3+ years with just minor upgrades and new videocards.
$450 i7 970 is in no way a "minor upgrade".
$200 for a used i7-920? What.
If you are this far in the game you may be better off just waiting for haswell.
If it has Q1 launch in 2013 better to jump on the tock than the tick if you ask me.
