'Negro' - a choice on census form

How many of you posters so far have aspergers? Do you really lack the social skills to understand that "negro" is an outdated term now? I'm from Trinidad, a country where "negro" is still used for black people and isn't derogatory but "black" is. In Trinidad, it's an acceptable term for a census form, but this isn't Trinidad. And personally I think "negro" sounds better, but it's not the word that group of people prefers.

If you don't get it, fine, just go back to putting your hair in ponytails and wearing stone washed jeans or whatever you aspergies do when you're not trolling on the internet.

for me, race = human, ethnicity = american. any united states citizen that identifies as otherwise should go to whatever place is before the hyphen.

if the census takers want anything further, they will see the end of a shotgun and be told to get off my land.

I love asperges, especially when grilled with some olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Honestly, I simply don't give a shit either way. I personally feel that minorities are responsible for more racism then anyone. They keep it alive, they want racism, they want outrage, they want excuses.

To me there are two classes of people.

1) Stupid people
2) Everyone remaining.

Yes I'm sure that's what the Afrikaaners say too, now that their apartheid is also over. 🙄

It doesn't say "great person" or "nigra," so no intended offense found.

But census officials disagree, saying they found some older African Americans identify themselves that way and they're trying to be inclusive. In a statement, they said: "Results from the census in 2000 showed that a number of respondents provided a write-in response of 'negro' when answering the question on race."

I know a couple of older Black people (grandkids' father's family) who prefer "Negro" to "African-American."
"We ain't never been to Africa...We ain't African-American. We're Americans who are black or negro."

That's how I feel about "African American." That's as racist as anything else, lumping all dark skinned people into "African" when many of then are either 1) not of African descent or 2) have never been to Africa.

I think calling people "black" and "white" (in any language) is insulting. For one, no one is really black or white in actual skin tone. It's a stupid generalization based on what our skin tones "tend toward" more than anything. I once went deer hunting with my grandfather and he pointed out a doe that appeared to have a slightly darker colored coat than the other deer in the field. He called her a "blue doe", even though her overall appearance was nearly exactly like that of the other deer, with the only difference being a barely perceptible darkness of hair. It's strange how people label things as though they are entirely characterized by what amount to minor differences.

More importantly, people associate white with "good" and black with "evil". The subconscious connotation is of two opposing forces, one standing for all that is good in the world, the other standing for all that is wrong with it.

Smoked a bowl for breakfast didn't you?

It's lumping people of African descent into that group, not all dark people. Dark skinned Indians, Aborigines, and Asians are not categorized as African American

Got to love it when the "seperate people into special little classes" types insult one class of people (people with asperger syndrome) while defending getting insulted over the use of another term to classify a group of people.

Not sure what you mean by "separate people into special little classes type". The classes exist, period. Race does exist thanks to isolation that existed for most of man's history, despite the politically correct garbage that says "we are all one race, human". The only problem is our terms need refining. For example I'm mostly Indian, yet I check the box that says "Asian". The only thing I have in common with a Chinese person is continent of origin, and we are more closely related to whites than them.

Considering the Asperger's having nerds are being complete asses and attacking a whole race for what they want to be called, I think I'm perfectly justified in insulting them for being Aspergies. Maybe it helps them be aware that the reason they don't get certain things intuitively is that they have a mild disorder.

And yes I'm perfectly aware of the irony, which is specifically why I just invented the term "Aspergies". If they want to be called something else, TOUGH LUCK.

Seriously. If the goal is a color blind society then why are we even asking for that information on a census form? It is foolish if you ask me. I cannot think of a single reason that does not ultimately lead to preferential treatment for some groups of people over others. That means that it will only perpetuate racism in my view. There are those who are racists and want to perpetuate racism. It is politically and financially advantageous to perpetuate racism. My view is that the majority of politicians and equal rights activists are actually more racist than the vast majority of the population. Politicians gain political power and activists benefit financially simple as that. Just a bunch of hypocrites if you ask me.

I think you are missing something important. The different races in this country are isolated culturally and geographically. So it's useful to track race information.

For example, without census and other data on race, how would we be able to discuss the fact that blacks in America are doing much worse than whites and figure out solutions? How would we be able to quantify the reality that Asians are doing much better as a group than everyone else, and potentially use that information for the greater good?

UNCF,NAACP, and BET are dumb. All they do are create methods to increase separation rather than peaceful assimilation
