'Negro' - a choice on census form

BET is a media outlet that focuses on black culture, hence the name Black Entertainment Television. It doesn't mean black only-- there people of all races represented on the network.

I think you should familiarize yourself with what culture is. Blacks in America have unique dialects, foods, music, and customs.... Just like every other group of people. You don't notice any differences when you visit the homes of your friends of different races?

My rural white friend's family roasted a wild pig for New Year's Eve because hunting is part of their culture. My brother's wife's black family holds hands and prays before eating Christmas dinner because loving Jesus is part of their culture. My Asian friends eat eggrolls on every holiday because that's a part of their culture.

Like it or not, we aren't all the same, and that is a good thing. It's what makes America great.

If black culture didn't exist, we wouldn't have jazz, rap, R&B, or even rock music. If you think none of those are real, do you only listen to European classical music?

Sure jazz, rap, R&B might have came from a black person, but it could have easily been created by any other.

It /could/ have been, but it would be highly unlikely. The perfect combination came together of traditional African rhythms and vocal styles, with found western instruments. I doubt very much there would be jazz in any form that is recognized today without black people, and more specifically ex American slaves.

started in the 40's when the word was commonly used. The name hasn't changed because it's historical. If they had started it in 2009 it most certainly wouldn't be called the UNCF.

You know how the government knows what percentage of each minority there are? That's how. It's all for statistics, which is the main reason for the census these days.

Also, I don't see 'negro' as a derogatory term at all. It's just spanish for black =P.

The point of the federal census is to appropriate seats in the House of Representatives not used for spending programs/handouts to special interests.

I don't know, but they use the census secondarily as a reason to gather population statistics. Do they NEED them? Probably not, but why not?

We have an African American in our department. He was just naturalized as a US citizen. Previously, he was from South Africa. So, our African American is caucasian. Oops.

All of those terms are correct...

They need to be abolished. You're an American or you're not. There's nothing wrong with not being one, but you're an American or you're not.

African American is a terrible description. There are millions of white Africans, Arab Africans, Berber Africans, Asian Africans, etc that look nothing like blacks. In fact I'd say half of Africans are not black.

Negro is proper because that's what census wants to know after all, skin color.

One of my black friends in HS, Cedric was like you. We called each other every racial slur in the book. Black jokes, white jokes and especially Asian jokes since none were around.
