thanks for the responses guys. it's a learning experience for me and this time i want to try negotiating this time around after just accepting my first two offers with my first jobs.
by the way how often do you guys find yourselves negotiating up? or do you folks generally just accept the first amount they offer you?
I usually accept the first amount they offer me,
if the offer is fair. If it's not fair, I simply turn them down on the spot. If they don't realize my skills are worth a certain amount of money, then they don't deserve my consideration. A lowball offer that's later "brought up to a decent level" is all well and good... but their first offer gives you an insight as to how they will probably handle your future raises.
I was working with a consulting company, and I had a client who was needing me 4-5 days per week, all day, at $100-$125/hr. Since they'd be better off just hiring me outright, they decided to buy my employer out of their customer contract. When the customer asked me what my salary range was. I gave them a $5000 window, and I set the salary floor at a value that was acceptable to me. To my surprise, they didn't throw me the lowest possible offer - they bumped it by $1000. Since that was $1000 more than would have been acceptable, I took it. Had they offered me the lowest amount, I'd have taken it, but would have kept my eyes open for any future signs of stinginess. Had they offered me less than my salary window, I'd have turned them down flat.
So to me, negotiation is simple, and usually quick. I know what I'm worth because I know what someone at my skill level is worth. I set a value that's acceptable to me (figuring in bonuses and benefits), and if they match or exceed it, I don't squeeze for more money just to be greedy. And, to be honest, neither my salary nor my career are hurting.
