Need Wisdom Tooth extracted

Went to the Dentist today, he said it was too far back, had a cavity and needs to be extracted. He told me I would be fine if with just gas - his exact words were pretty much "you won't feel a thing even on Gas alone" Don't people typically get knocked out for Wisdom Teeth? He said I don't need to go to an oral surgeon, and the only pain I will feel will be for a few days after the tooth is taken out. He's making it seem almost too casual. Has anyone here had any of theirs extracted with just gas or a shot? The 2 people I know both said they were put to sleep for the procedure. I'm not looking to spend the ton extra to have that done as I have no insurance lol. Seems like it would really hurt to be awake for it.



 
I was drugged to shit on IV Ketamine for mine. Went through a pretty cool trip. You are basically "out", but your brain is still very active.
 
Had all 4 of mine done last month and my dad just had 2 pulled today. We were both put to sleep, though I received more medication then my father.
 
i had mine removed without getting knocked out, just a few needle stabs of anesthesia in the mouths.
 
Each tooth extraction is different, so it's difficult to say. I have all 4 extracted on two separate occasions, using locals alone.

1st time - Bad dentist. The teeth were partly submerged underneath the gumline, and so they needed to cut those open, which left gaping holes. They holes will heal quickly but despite my dentist telling me that rinsing would clear the holes of accumulated food, I eventually had to resort to getting a syringe just to blow out all the shit in there. I was in pain for two weeks or so, and my hydrocodone ran out too early.

2nd time - Good dentist. It took 5 minutes. He told me I'd feel a slight pressure, and then a second later said "Ok, that does it!". I asked if that meant he had loosened it up and was ready to begin. "Nope, it's out!". He gave it to me for a nice keepsake. No issues whatsoever, and I didn't need ANY of the hydrocodone he prescribed after insisting.

Basically, prepare for the worst if you have sideways wisdom teeth or they are submerged beneath the gums. With a good dentist and a normal tooth, it can come out in 2 minutes.

hummm I will suggest this to him, I know oral surgeons charge like $500 just to knock you out. That's more than it's going to cost me total without it. He wrote me a prescription for Vicodin(sp?) and I can't read the other. I guess I'll pick those up and go ask for an IV, I don't think Gas would suffice something on this level.
 
Did all four of mine, two impacted, on Novocaine alone. Could hear them cracking but didn't feel anything.

I had mine done last week using lidocaine. Mine was a little painful though since apparently the roots of the wisdom tooth were fairly deep and the lidocaine didn't numb in that area.
 
no gas just numbed. one of mine has to be cracked open and gum to be cut. Got stitches for that one and it's actually the soonest to recover. see if he will stitch you up i think that helps. my doctor was quick too, you will hear a sound but you won't feel a thing.

Yes the anesthesia is where I took it in the shorts. My insurance only covered part of it, so I had to write a nice check on the day of.
 
I depends on the person and what condition their wisdom tooth is in (impacted, etc) I suppose. Mine weren't impacted or any of that shizzle so they just used local anesthetic (I didn't wanna be put out anyway) and I didn't feel a thing.

They did have to reef pretty fucking hard on my bottom two, but I didn't feel any pain, just the pressure. They ended up breaking one tooth apart instead of yanking it out cause I thought they were gonna bust my damn lower jaw.
 
I had only one, but they only Novocained me and yanked it...it was easy/painless....have not had to go back, it's been 3 weeks or so.
 
a 2nd question, I don't have insurance as I stated. I know I'm going to need Vicodin, well it sounds like everyone does. I've never had to get a prescription drug before. What am I looking to pay here? I called the local pharmacy and I was on hold for about 25 minutes and ended up just hanging up.
 
I was awake the whole time. It took longer for the carbocaine to kick in than it did for the extraction.

It turned out that I'm allergic to the carbocaine though. It's nothing bad, but it does cause swelling. I got into an argument with the oral surgeon about it. He insisted it was from the extraction, but I kept telling him the reaction started before he started removing anything. I guess it's hard to prove swelling from something else when the procedure is going to cause swelling :roll:

As for cost, I don't know about cost to knock you out for the wisdom teeth, but to knock me out to get my jaw unwired was $250 (health insurance wouldn't cover getting knocked out to get unwired). That's not through a dentist or oral surgeon though, so it might be different.

Whatever it is, it is well worth it. Even if it is your first-born.



Generics arent that bad though.
 
I just had local. He sliced open my gums, since they were still sort of hiding underneath, then yanked them out. I went right to work afterwards.

I sort of have a high tolerance and somehwat enjoy pain, so I am not really the norm when it comes to this kind of stuff.

Work has been almost non existent for me lately and with the Dentist charging $350 I really don't have I might be SOL for a bit until I can afford that + the meds. He said if I wait much longer it will get infected and I'll need to take Antibiotics and he won't be able to do anything until the infection is gone. Sounds like a scare tactic but regardless I don't want to put this off.

Ask for generics; they'll be a third of the price. Not sure what the price is specifically and I don't want to search for "generic vicodin" on my work computer. 🙂

If it's a choice between going under and getting the after-care meds, GET THE AFTER CARE MEDS. At least for the first 24 hours you are going to need painkillers.
 
I had all three of mine done over 15 years ago (I only had three).

They put me out for it. I did not even ask if staying awake was an option. I hate needles and anything having to do with the dentist.

I would have jumped off a cliff afterwards without about a week of pain meds.

I think my Vicodin was like $17-20, and my insurance paid $10 of it.

BTW, decent private insurance (not great) is only around $12/mo. It is well worth it....
 
I got all four taken out at the same time six years ago. They just numb the area around and pulled them out.

I even drove in by myself and managed to drive myself back home before I started to feel the pain. Hehe.
 
I had two taken out on separate occasions with shots to the area. Didn't really feel anything either time, since the teeth were already out. One of them literally took about 10 seconds to pull out. They prescribed some tylenol with codeine, but I didn't end up taking any, just used an ice pack to the face.

I think it's a lot easier on you if the teeth are already out, versus if the tooth is still under your gums. So hopefully it shouldn't be too bad. The hardest part is eating the next few days.

Damn I'm going to be able to drive myself home? lol I know I sound dumb but I've never had anything done that required an IV or something similar. I figured I would be loopy for a few hours afterwards.

This doesn't sound so bad at all, up until the week after part MotionMan brought up. I will get the Vicodin and maybe a big bottle of Patron 🙂
