I had a nice nap when I had mine taken out. Of course a couple of mine were impacted, so there was various sharp implements going into my mouth doing things to me that I had no desire to be conscious for.
If the one(s) that your dentist want to remove are all erupted, it's much less a deal. Gas should work fine.
As far as pain management, I was swollen and somewhat in pain when the anesthesia wore off, probably for about 4 hours or so. I took one of whatever they gave me, and it made me feel rather ill, so I didn't take any more of that. I was fine on a couple ibuprofen every 4 hours for the first few days. I actually hurt more from the infection I got a week later (I was already trying to eat things I shouldn't have been). Nothing like having copious amounts of puss and blood oozing from your gums! TASTY!
