Need to secure washer & dryer from neighbors. Do they make key locked ones?

Landlord is letting us put a washer and dryer in the basement. We share the buidling with one other tenant. That tenant lived there before us, and the landlord said the last time he had a washer & dryer in the basement it caused him headaches because the upstairs tenant (same one who still lives there now) kept putting coins in the washer which kept making it break and eventually broke it for good. He said the tenants also bitched to him about always fighting over the other tenant using it when they wanted to.

The landlord said we could get one put in if we paid for it, and recommended that if the tenant upstairs asked to share it, that we say no. Totally fine with me. I haven't started researching models yet. The first thing I want to know is whether or not they make washers & dryers that require a key in order to use them. Or if it would be easy to drill some holes and put padlocks on them (not sure if this would cause problems, seems like at least the dryers need to be airtight and don't have places on the doors where you can drill without breaking the air-tightness).

I guess we do have the option of getting a coin-op units but that would be a problem because it includes more gadgetry than we need and I suspect those would be more expensive than normal units. Plus the neighbor could interpret this as an invitation for him to use them as long as he puts quarters in.

From what I've heard of him, and from the times I've met him, the neighbor seems like a really douchey guy, so while I think just asking him not to use them would probably be fine, I'd rather be sure about it and prevent any issues from the get go.

Just unplug them and use fake plugs. Neighbor will most likely be too stupid to figure it out.

put a ninja next to washer/dryer......that should do it!

But seriously, you could use a latch system......latch over eyehole screw+padlock FTW

So you're saying to screw a latch onto the door and body of the washer and dryer? Would this cause a problem for the dryer? Or is the part of the chassis that faces the outside okay to drill into (won't break airtight seal that is needed?)?

I thought just now that I could weld a latch onto the door & frame too, if drilling holes into the units is a problem. I don't know anything about welding so I might have to get someone to do that for me. But would one be able to weld stuff to the painted exterior of a washer & dryer?

Erm, not my area of expertise, just a suggestion. Maybe drill holes on each side, not the front, extend latch across the front? Maybe use some JB weld, rather than screws? I bet soemone makes a strong enough epoxy to hold a latch

Another good idea. If for some reason the VoltBolt idea doesn't work I will try this.

Just make sure the douchebag tenant does not sabotage your washer/drier in any way.

What could he do to sabotage? Anything obvious I could watch out for? I don't think he'd do anything obvious since we'd know it was him. No one else would have access to the basement.

Video camera FTW...........and if you catch him.....burn his "boxes of stuff"...........

Yeah maybe I'll have to get a wireless camera to watch over the stuff. Seems like a pain.

Basement is right under us so something that works over wifi would probably work fine.

Awesome! The VoltBolt, or something similar is probably what we'll go with. Problem solved! I wondered if they made something like that but I wasn't sure what to google for.

There's a flaw with that thing.

As soon as your neighbour hears the washer going, he can run downstairs unplug the washer, take the volt bolt, plug the washer back in, and make the voltbolt disappear.

You then have to keep buying them.

Instead of screwing a couple of latches in, you could try using some superglue.

do you have room in your apartment for apartment size washer & dryer? If so....... that would be the easier way to go. No need for lock.

another idea is to make a wooden enclosure around the wash & dryer and put a lock on the door.

or you could buy a coin op commercial wash dryer and let them use it.......... it will pay for itself ;)

Cheers,

even better..............leave a bottle of detergent containing a dye of some sort near the washer. I bet this guy is so douchy, he would use it. His clothes would be ruined.....and he can't really hold you accountable, as he CHOSE to use your machine :)

Is your neighbor an immature douche? If not, how about talking with him and seeing if he is willing to pay half the cost and responsibly share the washer and dryer?

It might be better in the long run, since you have to live with him.
