Landlord is letting us put a washer and dryer in the basement. We share the buidling with one other tenant. That tenant lived there before us, and the landlord said the last time he had a washer & dryer in the basement it caused him headaches because the upstairs tenant (same one who still lives there now) kept putting coins in the washer which kept making it break and eventually broke it for good. He said the tenants also bitched to him about always fighting over the other tenant using it when they wanted to.
The landlord said we could get one put in if we paid for it, and recommended that if the tenant upstairs asked to share it, that we say no. Totally fine with me. I haven't started researching models yet. The first thing I want to know is whether or not they make washers & dryers that require a key in order to use them. Or if it would be easy to drill some holes and put padlocks on them (not sure if this would cause problems, seems like at least the dryers need to be airtight and don't have places on the doors where you can drill without breaking the air-tightness).
I guess we do have the option of getting a coin-op units but that would be a problem because it includes more gadgetry than we need and I suspect those would be more expensive than normal units. Plus the neighbor could interpret this as an invitation for him to use them as long as he puts quarters in.
From what I've heard of him, and from the times I've met him, the neighbor seems like a really douchey guy, so while I think just asking him not to use them would probably be fine, I'd rather be sure about it and prevent any issues from the get go.
