One of my friends in California (I don't live there anymore) recently met another hardware geek...
Unfortunately, the new kid is the kind of person who lives at XS, and takes some stimulants while reading it.

Here's a conversation I had with the friend (when he mentioned this kid who is going to give him 'ub3r 0v3rcl0c|<s')

Brian: WOWWWWWWWWWWW
thel33tslacker: ?
Brian: I met someone that pwns you
Brian: for computers
thel33tslacker: o_O
thel33tslacker: who?
Brian: my mind is spinning lik!@$#%!%@# so much knowledge in so little time
Brian: !
thel33tslacker: Who, and what did he say that 'blew me away'?
Brian: some asian kid that goes to aliso niguel
Brian: i have to go, but he's "teh" l33t hacker like you wouldn't believe. and he's going to show me how he got a 3.10GHZ OVERCLOCK on his 3000+ VENICE!!!!!
thel33tslacker: BFD?
Brian: "you can get the same thing, i'll help you"
Brian: and he uses the STOCK COOLEr
Brian: STOCCKKKKKKKKKK
thel33tslacker: Results Brian.
thel33tslacker: 3.1Ghz doesn't come stock on most Venice's.
thel33tslacker: Trust me.
thel33tslacker: Check XS or AAT.
thel33tslacker: Also..
thel33tslacker: do the math.
Brian: no
Brian: that's his overclock
thel33tslacker: What motherboard is he running?
Brian: duh
Brian: DFI lan party something
thel33tslacker: Yeah, same here.
thel33tslacker: Your board won't be able to do it.
thel33tslacker: You can't put out those kind of HTTs.
Brian: he said it doesn't matter
thel33tslacker: You'd have to have 344HTT to hit that.
thel33tslacker: What's his MSN/
thel33tslacker: AIM
Brian: he said he has an update for me, and then he'll change my cpu paste, and adjust my voltages a LOT and i'll bea ble to do it
thel33tslacker: BRIAN!
thel33tslacker: Do you realize that adjusting voltages to 1.7+ = frying chip?
thel33tslacker: I have no doubt I could get your chip to 3.1Ghz if I pumped huge voltages into it, it just wouldn't be SAFE.
thel33tslacker: As in, it would die in a year/two/less.
thel33tslacker: Also, CPU paste may lower temps a few Cs--it doesn't help the delta that much.
Brian: Well, he's been building computers since he was six, programming in three different "languages" since 9, and working for networking for some firm for 2 years. soooooooo i think im ok
Brian: and he's set 2 6800s on fire
thel33tslacker: Alright.
Brian: the week after they came out
thel33tslacker: Point proven.
thel33tslacker: Brian. Tell me.
thel33tslacker: How is it possible do something that your hardware doesn't physically allow
thel33tslacker: Your motherboard will put out 300 HTTmax maybe 315.
Brian: he did it with less.
thel33tslacker: BRIAN. HTT.
Brian: i know what you mean
thel33tslacker: HTTXCPU Multipler = CPU speed.
Brian: he told me about it
Brian: i know
thel33tslacker: You can't adjust the CPU Multi unless you have an FX chip.
thel33tslacker: So...
Brian: it's not the multiplier. it's something else
Brian: silly child
thel33tslacker: You're capped by the max of your HTT. Unless your CPU craps out first.
thel33tslacker: BRIAN. THERE IS NOTHING ELSE.
Brian: i'll just tlell you when i do it
thel33tslacker: Alright.
thel33tslacker: Let me know your voltages/etc.
thel33tslacker: When your computer dies, lemee know.
He had to run after that.

Anyway, what can I do to save my friend? He isn't listening!

At this point in time, I can see this Asian kid coming over, cranking the volts up to 1.7 on his crap WC system (crap as in 3/8" OD tubing. Yes, 3/8" OD.), then laughing manically while my friend's computer frys. (Or laughing internally as he knows he's set off a time bomb.)

agreed.....if he doesn't listen the first time, just simply let him do it or you could show him this thread first...

btw, at 1.7V, it should be instant fry unless you have like phase change...

Well first, just let your friend know about the possible consequences of pumping that many volts through his chip.

Second, what kind of water-cooling system does your buddy have? 3/8" tubing isn't all that bad as long as he has a decent pump, radiator, and block. Guys in the UK get some crazy clocks using 1/4" tubing in their setups.

Third, if I read the conversation correctly, your buddy is using an Ultra-D. Those boards can go well above 315HTT with the right tweaking and revision. I've seen one guy running 8x400 for his 24/7 rig using an Ultra-D.

Fourth, 1.7V (if that's what your friend mentioned) is high, but not instant death rig-goes-up-in-a-burst-of-flames kinda high. I ran 1.65V through my 3700+ for 12 hours at a time with no ill effects. Guys over at XS pump 1.8V+ through their 90nm chips. Granted that's not the best plan if you want your chip to last awhile, but it's not going to create a space time continuam either.

Lastly, at least your buddy is using a 3000+ Venice which would cost ~$125 to replace and not an FX-60 or similiar high-end chip.

He didn't specify 1.7v, but I assume most venice's could hit 3.1 provided they had that much voltage behind them.

And yeah, I'd like to let him learn his lesson, but it's an expensive one for a teenager.

Any suggestions on what to do?
Could always link him here if I accrue enough "Wow he's an idiot if he does that"s.

Thanks.

First of all, why point out he's an asian? Got something against them? ;)

Second, if he won't listen to you, a "trusted" friend, who here can stop him from doing this?

Would you mind posting his chat after he fries his chip so I can have a laugh?

Id also love to see the other guy that has 3.10ghz on a 3000 venice with a stock cooler. lmao! So full of it.

Nothing against asians at all :p I just have this image in my head that lent itself to the description.
If he were white, I would've envisioned a pale skinny white guy.
Same sort of stereotype in my head for a black guy... or any other skin color you can thnk of.
I'm an imaginative person :p

In response to elf.
1) I did. Hence the topic... it's like trying to convince someone to come out of a con. The prize is so good that it's hard to step back into reality.

2)Also, it was a $100 water cooling KIT
Radiator, tubing, fan and pump. I don't think $100 will buy you much in terms of water cooling, my setup set me back ~200 and it's only mediocre.

3)He has a Fatal1ty board--I tried to get him to grab a DFI board, didn't work. It's the Asian kid who supposedly has this 3.1Ghz Venice chip that has the DFI.

And yes, true...
I'll link him here, if he still doesn't believe me... lesson learned.

Thanks guys.

let him learn his lesson FTW

Brian sounds a bit silly. Gullible to say the least. Maybe try playing this 'asian guy' at his own game? Tell brian that you've got a 3800+ X2 that you've managed to unlock into 7000+ single core, and that all single core AMD chips are just dual cores with one core locked out in the BIOS. sorry, teh BIOS. The 'asian guy' is clearly FOS, as in, so FOS, it's flooded all the way to me in england from california, and that's a lot of S.

Also, on a partially truthful note, tell Brian to use toothpaste instead of artic silver. It works better in the short run, until it dries up.

My final thoughts, as this 'asian guy' is FOS, most probably he'll go to his house (or condo, ), and either they'll get told off by his mum for taking the panel off dad's PC, or Brian will be touched in special ways by said 'asian guy' and will not be so gullible in the future.

EDIT: k, <rant> also, on the subject of the 6800s, and the fire, bwahahahahahahahahaaahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaa that just absolutely stinks of a guy who is FOS. Why would you do that? oh oh oh, <02_ü|2_50O0o_1337? if he is 5Oo0 1337, why would he burn them? I mean, for what gain? If he was such a 1337_|-|4XX0|2222_|\/|/-\573|2, why didn't he just, erm, use them? If he even had them, which I doubt, he probably set them on fire a week after they came out because mummy and daddy both bought him one for his birthday (lack of communication as daddy is away on business a lot), and after spending a week trying to figure out what they were, he eventually figured they must be toaster mods, as he kept reading about toasters on DFI-street, so he forced them both into the family bread burner and hit the necessary switches. Seriously, tell Brian you don't care coz you're getting laid or something, and that the only thing that's getting pwnd is his candy @55. or not, i dno.

The guy's our age, but so I don't think he'll have to worry about the last bit

Yeah, read about the toothpaste bit :p I'd feel a bit too guilty doing that.

Brian's a good guy, he does know a bit about hardware, it just seems like every time we get a chance to talk he's come up with something brilliant, or he knows more than I do... or something along those lines.

House, actually... and if I remember correctly.. he used to get in trouble for taking the panel off--until he intentionally ripped off the caps to get a new computer

Oh well. His loss.
Thanks guys.

ah, ok.in that case, learn his lesson FTW

and post the ensueing convo here, so we can laugh at his expense.
