I've tried a few programs from download.com and wasn't very impressed (e.g. if a file in the locked folder was in recent documents, it could be opened from there). I've also tried password protecting with winzip, but it protects individual files, not the compressed folder.

have you already checked out TweakXP? I think they have a password protect feature.

I've found best results by working with file permissions, though. set the permissions so that you're account is the only one with access to the folders, and no other user will be able to access or view the contents.

the only hitch is that you need to remember to log yourself out of the computer.

I'll take a look at tweakxp. logging off every time wouldn't be very reasonable.

try WinRAR - it can password protect an entire archive which can be a folder or just a bunch of files. You can't even view the files/folders until you authenticate successfully.

I tried winrar too and it did the same thing is winzip... maybe there's another way to go about doing it.

tweak-xp seems to work well. however, it won't let me password protect the program so anyone could go in and disable to protection on the folders anyway. is this not available in the demo version or is there something I need to change?

If you're gonna be gone for a period of time longer than it takes someone to go to tweakxp and unlock it, you should jsut log off, thats pretty safe.

You could always quick log-ff by hitting (Windoze Key + L) when you have a pass. I realized that when I'm touching the mouse less, I'm usually more productive.

is this similar to password protection on websites? that's how I'd want it to work... I have full access to the folder once I enter the password, but not after closing the "browser." how easy is this to set up?

I only use it to encrypt single files

you just click on the encrypted file - give the password and then it shows the content

simple and secure. I guess it's the same with folders
