Need to lose weight

I eat pretty well because I'm a vegetarian (only been about a month now) but I weigh around 165 and am 5'5".

Is the answer to just start doing cardio every day? I'd like to get into shape a bit better, maybe starting by losing weight, and then working on building muscle.
 
Cardio works, there's no denying it. Start off easy and build up, you don't want to injure yourself or become discouraged.
 
Do Pull-Ups. If you can't do them, Do reverse pull-ups where you jump, then ease down slowly, then repeat. Burning fat is much faster when you have More powerful muscles that draws more energy to do anything at all.

If you like flashing colors I've heard wonder stories about DDR.
Jogging is just boring and HUGE on the discouraging part. That is why most people start and quit so quickly.

dips across chairs, feet on the floor until you can put them on another chair
sit ups
squats

You can get more advance later.

Just because you're a vegetarian doesn't mean you're not eating above maintenance. Track your calories with fitday or something of the like and reduce your intake until you're loosing 1-2lbs/wk.
 
Low protein diet + tons of cardio + no weight lifting = recipe for LBM loss.

Start tracking what you eat on fitday, lift weights, and do a bit of cardio.
 
I've made an account on Fitday.com and have another question - what's a reasonable goal for me in the next month or so?

Edit: I'll go with the idea of 2-3 pounds per week, with a goal of 10 pounds a month from now, unless someone else has a reason for something different.

Unless you're really overweight, 1-1.5 pounds lost a week is generally considered the sweet spot.
 
I've never figured why so much emphasis is placed on upper body 'vanity' excercises like sit-ups and push-ups for losing weight. Your legs have the biggest muscles in your body and hence are the biggest source of burning calories. So, if your goal is simply to lose some extra weight and you have your diet figured out, then excercise that involves your legs will produce the most results under the shortest time.

Get a road bike, and go out and pedal every other day. Ride hard enough to keep your pulse elevated and breathing strong but steady. It's a good way to get fresh air, meet chicks, and it won't detroy your knees and hips like running will eventually do.

Take the remainder of your time and do some lower back / ab excercises and some range of motion work on your shoulders with a pair of cheap dumbells. You'll feel great in no time.

I'm also opposed to monitoring every once of body mass you burn off with a scale. If you are excercising right, and eating right, there's no need for the 'biggest loser' approach because you'lll lose weight. Let your body and motivation decide how much weight to lose - not an appliance form Walmart.

I may be reading a little too much into this, but don't put off muscle building until after you lose the weight or you might be continually putting it off. Start both your cardio and muscle routines under the same general time frame, depending how slow you are going maybe a month apart tops. The sooner you get both of these things implemented the better off you will be.
