Just stick with what you have. She'll get the hang of it sooner or later. If you have Crysis, at least the terrain looks pretty when she's learning.

Enemy Territory? I mean RTCW:ET, the original one, which is so much better than ET:QW

teach her how to aim that would help..mess with the mouse sensitivity and help show her that you can sort of find a level where its just easier to track the targets

Another vote for SS- on tourist mode it is VERY easy, it's very straightforward/linear and has a good blend of action and humor in it. IMO probably the best 'nub' FPS game there is.

NOLF IMO is a horrific choice- once you get to the parts where you are forced to sneak around it's pretty much gg for most rookies.

That's what I was thinking if you have two computers to play on. Get two copies and play it with her in single player co-op mode with bots.

UT 2003 or 2004, with the bots on the easiest setting it's actually hard to get killed unless you fall off of something.

This or Portal.

Postal 2 is a bad idea. The game has to load a new area every 5 steps, she'll get REALLY frustrated with it.

I tried switching to CoD4. A little slower paced. No good. She couldn't even finish the training mission at the beginning in less than 2 mins.
SO... I'm trying to find a cake walk easy FPS for her so she can start to build some skills with. Anyone have any suggestions??

Old School DOOM!

Way too many complicated puzzles to figure out. Not something a novice would be able to do easily. I think most of us forget that because we've been playing shooters since the Doom days.

The puzzles in Dark Forces may seem easy today but back then they were real challenges. Same with Half-life 1. Its often difficult to figure out what you are supposed to do in a first person game. You can run around the same spot a hundred times and not see the little button or switch. You can easily miss side passages as well.

For a total nooblet I would recommend Serious Sam on Easy mode. You get double health and you also regenerate health quickly. Its almost impossible to get killed unless you just let go of the mouse and keyboard in the middle of huge monster fest.
And they dont do the huge monster fests right away. You slowly build up to those as you go through the levels.

I would definitely NOT recommend HL1 to a new FPSer... There's a lot of jumping/balancing type stuff in there that is annoying for even seasoned FPSers, but would be downright hard for someone new to the genre. HL2, IMO, turned it down a notch in terms of difficulty.

Someone mentioned Quake 2, that isn't a bad one to start with. Maybe even old Duke Nukem 3D if she likes camp.

IMO, the main problem with Serious Sam (and Painkiller) is that they are mercilessly boring. If that was my introduction to FPSes, I would have probably quit. It's like grinding kills in an MMO.

BioShock! It looks good, controls are good, the atmosphere is creepy, and the story's excellent!

I'd have to 2nd this, Bioshock has some pretty simple AI and vita-chambers are beginner friendly.

Do you play on the Death Warrant servers?

Anyway, seriously, all UT fans should get UT 2004 and learn the Invasion Monster Mash RPG game mod 'cause it's so much fun once you know what you're doing.

No, haven't played in a while, though my girlfriend and I ran our own server for about a year.

The best description of what playing Serious Sam is like. Therein lies the game's beauty.

Have to disagree, too many options between weapons, ammo, plasmids, upgrades, etc for the amateur shooter fan. Much better off with a straightforward shooter like Serious Sam 2, Far Cry (with god mode) or Quake 4.

I'd say Quake 4. Enemies are right in front of you, it's linear, but it doesn't have the "we're gonna make monsters pop out to startle you" edge of Doom 3.

I would say Prey, but I think the portals and wall-walking might be a little too disorienting. Sometimes while playing I have to stop and think "ok, where am I?"

<----Been playing FPS's for 10 years

It depends on what exactly you're looking for. There is a difference between easy games and simple games. Bioshock is easy but not simple while UT3 is vice versa.

The puzzles in Dark Forces may seem easy today but back then they were real challenges.

Actually, the puzzles in those old games are often quite obscure compared to what modern games have. I played this game for the first time early this year (through Dosbox) and found many of the puzzles hard enough that I had to consult walkthroughs.

IMO, the main problem with Serious Sam (and Painkiller) is that they are mercilessly boring. If that was my introduction to FPSes, I would have probably quit. It's like grinding kills in an MMO.

If you want maximum variety, I think Unreal 2 still does that best among singleplayer FPSs. (in terms of environments, weapons, enemies and so on)

Yep, old games had really good puzzles. JKII had good ones too.

I think new players need to get used to the keyboard/mouse combo first.. After that they should be able to play any FPS.. game really doesn't matter that much.
I agree with Serious Sam for new players as well.. I think wide open maps where monsters come straight at you from all directions are fun for newbs, boring for veterans thou :)
