Here is one you will have to dig hard to find. The song is "Puppet Dance" by Roger Hodgson of Supertramp Fame.
This is a song on one of his solo albums (Hai Hai). It is a tear-jerker for sure, very sad (read the lyrics):

Puppet Dance : Roger Hodgson

Why did you leave me all alone, why didn't you tell me you were going home
Everything changes now you're gone, making me wonder how to carry on
Over and over you gave to me, I wish I had told you what you meant to me
Why does it always have to end, losing a loved one is so hard...

Oh my Lord, is it right? By the light of the darkest night
You're never gonna see, you're never gonna see me crying
Where's the warmth of the sun? Was there something that I should have done?
You're never gonna see, you're never gonna see me crying

What I would give just to hear you laugh, but all I have left is just a photograph
Oh to have known you all those years, wish I had known how to dry your tears
Everything matters when you're young, everything shatters when the day is done
Everything falters in the end, losing a loved one is so hard...

Oh my Lord, is it right? By the light of the darkest night
You're never gonna see, you're never gonna see me crying
Where's the warmth of the sun? Was there something that I should have done?
You're never gonna see, you're never gonna see me crying

So many feelings rushing in, it's too late for thinking how it could have been
Who knows the reason, was meant to be, it's gonna be lonely
Will you wait for me...?

Tom Waits: "The Heart of Saturday Night" everything off that album is stellar, particularly the title track. And it's not typical Waits, for those who can't get into him.

One of those gems that slipped under the radar...and has remained that way for 3 decades....

I  Sigur Ros. I have Agaetis Byrjun (discovered through the Vanilla Sky soundtrack), () and a few tracks off Takk.

I'm currently checking out Mad Season's album. The list here reminded me I have a lot of music that I haven't listened to in months, if not years. Staind, Fiona Apple, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, Sarah McLachlan, Clapton, that one Mazzy Star song that was mentioned etc.

Currently listening to Mad Season's album. Will follow it up with Counting Crows (I liked that one song on the Cruel Intentions soundtrack), Opeth and Tom Petty. I heard some of Explosions in the Sky (the album with the really long title...Those Who Want The Truth...) but didn't feel much for it. I liked Mogwai and Hellen Stellar more (discovered them both through the Miami Vice and Elizabethtown soundtracks).

Which reminds me, Elton John's My Father's Gun is beautiful.

Good thread and thanks for all the suggestions everyone. This should keep me occupied for a while.

Luther Van Dross - Dance with my Father

Back when I was a child
Before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high
And dance with my mother and me and then

Spin me around till I fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure
I was loved

If I could get another chance
Another walk, another dance with him
I?d play a song that would never, ever end
How I?d love, love, love to dance with my father again

Ooh, ooh

When I and my mother would disagree
To get my way I would run from her to him
He?d make me laugh just to comfort me, yeah, yeah
Then finally make me do just what my mama said

Later that night when I was asleep
He left a dollar under my sheet
Never dreamed that he
Would be gone from me

If I could steal one final glance
One final step, one final dance with him
I?d play a song that would never, ever end
?Cause I?d love, love, love to dance with my father
again

Sometimes I?d listen outside her door
And I?d hear her, mama cryin? for him
I pray for her even more than me
I pray for her even more than me

I know I?m prayin? for much too much
But could You send back the only man she loved
I know You don?t do it usually
But Lord, she?s dyin? to dance with my father again
Every night I fall asleep
And this is all I ever dream

Well, he's dead now so he is dancing with his father again.

That is a fucking depressing song though...:(

I cried when I heard it the first time. I get misty eyed once in a while now when I put on the DVD-A.

i say some because ES is definitely melancholy, kill-yourself lyrics
but it doesnt have the minimalism that OP wanted... theres some poppy type stuff (musicality wise) in there
