If you liked Running to Stand Still, you will LOVE Stay, Kite and Ultraviolet also by U2.

Oh, and check out Aimee Mann for "dysfunctional" music. Sad and depressing, but not one bit emo. Try Red Vines and Ghostworld; both have videos so try searching for them on youtube. Matthew Good is also ok.

Dan Fogelburg

Particularly "Same Auld Lang Syne," "Run for the Roses," "To the Morning," "Souvenirs," and more...

And echo Imp on U2 - the whole middle part (tracks 2-8 or so) of "All That You Can't Leave Behind."

(not sure if this is considered emo or not, but i think its a deep song)

I was incredibly unimpressed with The Fray. They were talked up so much so I bought that album and I only listened twice because I felt like it was the same two or three songs over and over. Lyrically, I understand the deepness of that song. Musically, his voice wears on me and it's nothing impressive.

I totally back Opeth on this one. They just have too many excellent songs to name.

"Benighted"
"Harvest"
"Patterns in the Ivy"

The entire "Damnation" album....

Do some youtube searches.

Fred Neil - every single song he ever sang.

A Little Bit of Rain

I burned my fingers on the coffee pot
Toast was cold and the orange juice was hot.
I should start over but you know I'd rather not.
Same thing gonna happen again
Cause that's the bag I'm in.

Last night as I was walking down the street,
Whistling the blues to the tapping of my feet,
Some jive crank called the cops on the beat.
It'll happen every single time.

Every morning when I get up,
I miss my connection and I'm late for work again
You know they'll probably drop the atom bomb the day my ship comes in.
I dasn't bet a nickle cause I'd get paid off in yen.
Sometimes you just can't win cause that's the bag I'm in.

Jukebox playing the same old melody,
Keep on bringing back those blue memories.
This evil feeling's gonna be the death of me
I think I'm going out of my mind.

Every morning when I wake up,
I burn my fingers on the pot,
Toast is cold and the orange juice is hot,
I should start over but you know I'd rather not
Same thing gonna happen again,
Cause that's the bag I'm in.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=GX-EUff234Q&feature=related definitely the one you want to hear. Picks up intensity/awesomeness at about 5:10
----10,000 days lyrics

Listen to the tales and romanticize,
How we'd follow the path of the hero.
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun.
How we rise to the height of our halo.

Listen to the tales as we all rationalize
Our way into the arms of the savior,
Feigning all the trials and the tribulations;
None of us have actually been there.
Not like you.

Ignorant siblings in the congregation
Gather around spewing sympathy,
Spare me.
None of them can even hold a candle up to you.
Blinded by choice, these hypocrites won't see.

But, enough about the collective Judas.
Who could deny you were the one who
Illuminated your little piece of the divine?

And this little light of mine, a gift you passed on to me;
I'm gonna let it shine to guide you safely on your way,
Your way home ...

Oh, what are they going to do when the lights go down
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they going to do when the rivers overrun
Other than tremble incessantly?

High is the way, but all eyes are upon the ground.
You were the light and the way they'll only read about.
I only pray, Heaven knows when to lift you out.
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough;
You're going home.

You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
Shake your fists at the gates saying:
"I've come home now!
Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father.
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
It's time now!
My time now!
Give me my, give me my wings!"

You are the light and way that they will only read about.

Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance,
(With the) burden of proof tossed upon the believers.
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence,
Judith Marie, unconditional one.

Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescents.
Difficult to see you in this light.
Please forgive this bold suggestion, but
Should you see your Maker's face tonight,
Look Him in the eye, look Him in the eye, and tell Him:
"I never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one.
Hallelujah, it's time for you to bring me home."

Luther Van Dross - Dance with my Father

Back when I was a child
Before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high
And dance with my mother and me and then

Spin me around till I fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure
I was loved

If I could get another chance
Another walk, another dance with him
I?d play a song that would never, ever end
How I?d love, love, love to dance with my father again

Ooh, ooh

When I and my mother would disagree
To get my way I would run from her to him
He?d make me laugh just to comfort me, yeah, yeah
Then finally make me do just what my mama said

Later that night when I was asleep
He left a dollar under my sheet
Never dreamed that he
Would be gone from me

If I could steal one final glance
One final step, one final dance with him
I?d play a song that would never, ever end
?Cause I?d love, love, love to dance with my father
again

Sometimes I?d listen outside her door
And I?d hear her, mama cryin? for him
I pray for her even more than me
I pray for her even more than me

I know I?m prayin? for much too much
But could You send back the only man she loved
I know You don?t do it usually
But Lord, she?s dyin? to dance with my father again
Every night I fall asleep
And this is all I ever dream

Well, he's dead now so he is dancing with his father again.

That is a fucking depressing song though...:(

Another song that comes to mind is Alice in Chains' Don't Follow

Looking for songs that flow well with a piano and acoustic guitar. Not too sappy but deep & moving. My memory appears to be failing me so help me out, ATOT.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Tuesday's Gone

I can't believe that no one has said Pink Floyd. They're probably exactly what you're looking for. Try listening to the whole "Wish You Were Here" album... it's beautiful, and IMO, their best album.
