Need song suggestions: melancholy, serene

Was just listening to U2's Running to Stand Still [The Joshua Tree] and I realized that this is probably my favorite type of music. Minimal music, lyrics and vocals that exhibit a feeling of pain and loss...yeah, all the good stuff.

Another song that comes to mind is Alice in Chains' Don't Follow

Looking for songs that flow well with a piano and acoustic guitar. Not too sappy but deep & moving. My memory appears to be failing me so help me out, ATOT.

how about Sunshower by Chris Cornell

Rhinoceros by Smashing Pumpkins although it gets hard at the end

a couple other SP tunes off of Siamese Dream like Soma or Spaceboy

there are a bunch of other AIC tunes that fit the bill, ie. Jar of Flies album

Blind Melon - Change or Sleepyhouse

Mad Season - River of Deceit

the U2 track you mentioned is one of my favourites from teh Joshua Tree though... that song kicks ass so it is hard to recommend something that kicks as much ass.

Thanks melty, I'll look into these. I'm familiar with most of AiC's work - I will check out the other songs. :)

True that!

black water park album by opeth

They're a unique death metal with plenty of beautiful interludes and breakdown periods. They loved this aspect so much, they released one album that's dedicated to the 'serene, melancholy' genre. No electric guitar found at all - just really mellow orchestra sounds.

Do you mean their Damnation album?

Opeth - Death Whispered a Lullaby from Damnation
Opeth - Isolation Years from Ghost Reveries

Luther Van Dross - Dance with my Father

Back when I was a child
Before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high
And dance with my mother and me and then

Spin me around till I fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure
I was loved

If I could get another chance
Another walk, another dance with him
I?d play a song that would never, ever end
How I?d love, love, love to dance with my father again

Ooh, ooh

When I and my mother would disagree
To get my way I would run from her to him
He?d make me laugh just to comfort me, yeah, yeah
Then finally make me do just what my mama said

Later that night when I was asleep
He left a dollar under my sheet
Never dreamed that he
Would be gone from me

If I could steal one final glance
One final step, one final dance with him
I?d play a song that would never, ever end
?Cause I?d love, love, love to dance with my father
again

Sometimes I?d listen outside her door
And I?d hear her, mama cryin? for him
I pray for her even more than me
I pray for her even more than me

I know I?m prayin? for much too much
But could You send back the only man she loved
I know You don?t do it usually
But Lord, she?s dyin? to dance with my father again
Every night I fall asleep
And this is all I ever dream

Blue October - "A Quiet Mind", "Weight of the World" and "For My Brother" (No piano....but they do have a violinist in the band)
The Clarks - "Penny on the Floor" (Fits the style of more lyrical focus, some harmonies and emotional than musical without being emo)

I like:

Stone Temple Pilots - Creep

Kansas - Dust in the Wind

Jewel - Painters (it's probably a girl thing and you'll hate it. But I like it a lot)

K.T. Tunstall - Heal Over

Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine

Chantal Kreviazuk - Leaving on a Jet Plane (this is my favorite version)

Some of these are electric rather than acoustic:

Fiona Apple - "Love Ridden" (When the Pawn...)
Tori Amos - most of her catalog
Sarah McLachlan - Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
Heather Nova - "Truth and Bone"
"Ship Song" - Nick Cave's original, or covers by Concrete Blonde, Heather Nova

Try listening to Counting Crows - August and Everything After.. Most of that album is probably similar to what you are looking for.

Spaceboy is really good.

Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees

Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head has this weird feel to it

Also Subterranean Homesick Alien has a sort of ethereal feel to it while at the same time depressing, but you have to be able to accept it for a more complex sad song than normal.

Also Ben Folds Five - Brick, but that's just a plain sad song.
