I bought Star Fox 64 on the virtual console and love it, but I cannot save the damn game! I get about 3 levels in and don't get the option to save. When I reset the console and go back into Star Fox, it takes me back to the beginning!

You should have bought a PS3 or XBox 360! :p

<-- Has no idea how to help you Duddy, but consider this a "bump." :)

Hmmm.... no idea :(

The N64 cartridge just saved automatically to it's internal memory.

I'll ask my brother and see if he has Starfox on his virtual console.

Pretty sure you're supposed to play through in one sitting. It's actually a VERY short game. The real fun is beating the game via every possible path and then getting the medal thingy in every level.

You have to beat it in one sitting. It's not that long, though. I remember beating the game in 3 hours. Leave it paused, if you have to.

Though it can be conquered within a few hours, this assumes you have a few spare hours to begin with. Unlike many other games that allow the saving of in-game progress at any time, Star Fox 64 only commits data to memory once the single player campaign has been completed. To make matters worse, the save state functionality of the Virtual Console--by which games are saved upon quitting to the Home menu--does not apply to Nintendo 64 games. With no way to save one's accomplishments after a brief mission or two, those of us who play in shorter bursts must either resign ourselves to playing the same few levels over and over again or perpetually leaving the game paused--neither one an attractive solution.

Or you could use the virtual console built in save feature. Just pause using the wii-mote and go back to the wii-menu. Next time you select to play that game it will go right back to where you paused last time. Give it a test run and you'll see what I mean.

Not that long when you're a kid and have nothing else to do, which is exactly who this game is made for. Of course, I played this game for countless hours trying to get the medal in each level that unlocks some super special thing (can't remember what...). This is one game in which virtually all the value is replay value. Pretty amazing accomplishment in retrospect.

Doesn't work for N64 games.

Well that sucks. It works for all the other systems so I just assumed. You'd be better off asking at gamefaqs, I'm sure the dorks over there have figured out something.

In tandum with everyone else, Star Fox games don't have save slots and I dont think the newer incarnations of the rail shooter has any either. It is played in one go but its a relatively quick go. It was a bit annoying for me in the original Star Fox for the SNES when I finally got to the last boss with the big flagship and TINY targets I have to destroy - and no saves either (third route).

If you dont mind, you could pull the ol' NES save trick from yesteryears (a la Super Mario 3 ;)). Pause the game with the home button and just leave the console on. Other than that, I really dont know.
