This time, for my brother. Being a mechanic, he never really thought of having a resume until now. Various circumstances are requiring he have one available. Unfortunately, I'm not the greatest at writing these things up. So... help!

What I have here is a solid 20 years of auto mechanic experience, but what I'm not sure about is how to represent his skills and certifications on the resume. Do I lump his ASE certifications together with the regular technical skills section? Do I break the certs up into a seperate section? Right now in a rough outline he has his professional experience, certifications, education, specialty areas (which should be noted I'm thinking), and his areas of experience as a manager.

I'm definitely thinking this is going to be a 2 page resume, but how to make it look good is the key.

Here's the areas you should have on the resume:

Objective
Summary of Qualifications
Skills and Accomplishments
Professional Experience
Education

Objective - A short description of what he wishes to obtain (position, etc.) - this should be changed for each position/business applying at.

Summary of Qualifications - A place to describe some things about you which may not fit elsewhere.

Skills and Accomplishments - I would put the cert here as well as any other specific things. Here is where you can put some things he did as a manager. Put major things here like "Increased store profits through new pricing structure" or something...be descriptive.

Prof. Exp./Education should be obvious.

I tend to like to use the Summary of Quals/Skills and Accomplishments as a hybrid Resume/cover letter. It lets you tell the employer some things about yourself and describe your strong points and past work.

He's a mechanic, and a manager, with nearly 20 years of experience. He probably will need a 2 page resume.
I've seen resumes of owners of multiple businesses with 30+ years of experience on only one page.
Keep it down to one with the most important information on it. Don't bother with every single detail, no one cares about every single detail.
Typically resumes are sized up after on or two glances.
