You're both adults, living in the real world, you feed the kids and get them to bed, you draw her a hot bath, you serve her a simple meal that you cook, you give her an envelope with a ribbon on it, in that envelope is a letter, handwritten by you acknowledging that as a couple you two are going thru that part of your wedding vows that mentioned "for richer or for poorer" you thank her in that letter for her loving support during this time, you tell her how you feel about her.. you end the letter with much optimism that 2010 will see you both having weathered this storm, at the end of the letter you promise her and the children Christmas in July.

In July, when bills are under control, you put up the darn tree and you have a traditional Xmas.

dr;tl/thread

but , clean all the toilets in the house, or whatever household chore SHE hates doing (but that she normally has to do)

winner, winner.

--Gift card for manicure + pedicure combo from a local nail place - $35
--New brands of good smelling shampoo/body wash (put them in the shower, don't wrap em..that's too ghetto) - $5ish.

Total cost for a bunch of relaxing stuff = $40

Throw these $0.00 gifts on top..

Clean the house while she is at work.. Yeah it sucks but she will notice and appreciate.

Cook dinner for her with a candle in the middle of the table. It doesn't matter if it's hamburger helper lasagna...It's the thought that counts.

Full body massage when she lays down - free

I think that would be a killer combo.. Manicure + pedicure + relaxing shower gifts + a clean house + prepared dinner + back massage = win win win..all for $40.

Does your wife have any hobbies/passions that she'd like to re-visit? For example, my wife went to school for art but has a corporate job, so this year I'm buying her a few art related things (drawing table, supplies) - that costs money, sure. But I'm also "renovating" our extra room into a art space for her. Mostly that entails moving shit around, maybe painting the walls, and just reorganizing things so that she has her own space.

How about that? Her own room? Clean it out, reuse furniture, put things on the wall that reflect her hobby, etc. God knows my favorite thing about moving into our current place was our extra room, and giving it to my wife hopefully will be considered sweet... Fingers crossed!

yoyo's idea is great, i've done that one myself. even if the end result is a cheap/free gift, the effort you put into creating/placing all the clues will be much appreciated.

one year i borrowed my brother's acoustic 6-string, found the tablature and lyrics to one of my wife's favorite songs on the intertubes, learned and memorized both, and then played and sang her the song as her present.

she loved it.

even if you don't know how to play the guitar, the tablature shows which strings and where you need to press down.

not everyone can sing

I've been out of work for 8 months and just recently got a job. For the next 2 months, the majority of our income will be going towards past/future bills and paying down debt.

I have been unsuccessful in coming up with ideas for a very low cost present for my wife and could use some suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

Leave a picture on her pillow of your boner with a note dangling from it tied with a string that says "Thinking of you"

Here is diagram of what it should look like
Code:
        3================D
           \ /
            \ /
        _____\______/_____
       |"THINKING OF YOU"|

lame-o.

ok, i did this with my gf and she totally loved it.

How is that lame? Honestly, if my husband and I couldn't afford to buy anything for Christmas, I would love to get something like that. I think it would be better than getting anything expensive. It shows true effort and thought rather than jewelry or something...
