Need reasons to let dad let me overclock...

He thinks I'm going to burn the cpu overclocking or something. I do n't want to go against what he says but at the same time I want to overclock. If I can get some good reasons, then I'll tell him and ask him again. The only one I can think of is that I won't change the voltage settings so it doesn't generate too much heat.

I need some more reasons, I'll be using a 2.4C (800mhz FSB and HT) to overclock on a DFI Lan Party Pro motherboard.

This may help: an excellent one-page rundown on the P4's self-defense mechanisms against overheat here. If you don't raise the voltage, it isn't very likely that it's going to suffer any harm (hides from pm). At the same time, I have to ask... what are you doing that a 2.4C isn't fast enough for?

Don't bother. Any crashes or even the most minor of issues will become "it's because my son had to mess with my machine." I'm sure you've had this happen with little things in the past but once you do something to it, you'll be the scapegoat.

I've been using my own PC for 4 years and only occasionally used my father's old Dell P2 450 MHz system with Win98SE (still the original factory install of it) and every time something else goes corrupt or fails at 98 loading it's because of "the crap programs my sons put on my machine." BTW: As far as I'm concerned, my brother puts more stuff on it than I. I'm not sure he's ever run adaware on his PC, but there's no reason for me to do it.

But anyway... i worked my ass off during the summer and built my own after my dad kept messing around with the computer... he never touched mine after that.

Asking your Dad to oc his pc is like .............. asking him if you can race the family car!
First show him you can build (and maintain) a dependable, stable normal pc.

Then, get your own pc and ............... do your own oc'ing thing with it and leave his alone!
This, "he doesn't have to know" advice is complete bullshit!

You like saving money maybe getting a 3Ghz processor for the price of a 2.4Ghz one. Though 2.4 is plenty fast enough already.

Ok...now I overclock, but in all fairness, is there any need to OC a 2.4Ghz P4 w/ HT and an 800Mhz bus? I mean, I overclock the PCs that I have paid for, but not ones I haven't and I only overclock because my 1800+ is falling behind the times. Sorry if I am being un-geek-like.

just overclock the chip until it melts, then tell your cheapo dad to buy you a new chip because 2.4 doesnt cut it anymore.

You have a good p oint, but its not like that since we have 4 computers in the house, with one being our server.

I'd do that too but he'll just make me save it for college. I'll try asking again but I'll be glad to buy the stuff on my own...

I think you have a good point, and my consensus is that if he lets me work and pay for it on my own then I'll OC, otherwise I'll use it how it is.

I think it comes down to me buying it and OCing, my dad buying it and not OCing, or me saving a little more to just get a 2.8C or something. Thanks for your advice.
