This guy on the IDM mailing list sums it up well:

Yeah I was being completely sarcastic - I hate moby with all my core, even Play was shite to me despite its critical acclaim. Should have been called "car commercials" or something.

I've not heard any Moby since that just because i cant stand the guy, he looks like a penis with glasses. I hate the way he talks, I hate how awkwardly entitled he sounds in interviews. I hate that he has no chin.

Then he came out with this new album and I was curious. I heard people saying good things, so I just had to go out and buy it (ed. find it on rapidshare). I have to admit, there are a couple tracks I like - they have a bit of a orchestral feel to them. BUt there are some tracks, like what you are describing with the 'singing'. He again tries to sing on this and it causes my deep down rage to bubble back up to the surface.

I just don't get why this guy is such a 'darling', im single-handedly using him as the scapegoat for killing any chance of electronic music in the mainstream. Its not a fair accusation, nor do I even have proper grounds for such an accusation. But it's what I believe.

Moby has poisoned the public perception of electronic music, unfortunately. I wish he never existed.

Different people like different things. I like everything except for country music. I've tried it all and liked it all and "electronic" music just sucks. Moby is a perfect example of why electronic music fans are idiots. I bet none of you know that Moby is a classically trained musician and that his background shines through in his music. The reason that Moby is so popular is that he knows about actual music and that translates into socially acceptable forms of techno.

Try out The Decemberists (not techno) to see what happens when someone actually put their creative story telling degree to work!

Anyways, no one should piss on the opinions of others like I did, or you did. Everyone likes different things. Just accept the fact that you like some unknown form of music that no one else cares for. And just so you know, it is not mainstream for a reason.

Try out EOTO (Free!) if you want to see what happens when some actual talented musicians do dance music.

Hell no, those tracks are the epitome of cheesy, cliched late 90s 140bpm stadium trance. They're the total opposite of downtempo. The only thing more opposite would be some 180bpm gabber non-sense.

This is downtempo. This is ambient. This is 'ultra' ambient.

Finally, someone knows what I'm looking for. Too bad Woob isn't on itunes.

Honestly I sampled about half of the artists mentioned above and I couldn't stand any of them at all.

I really like Woob but it seems the only way to buy it is on CD and it costs > $200.
