I need some new music to listen to at work. What I want is electronic music that is not hardcore bass thumping crap but more misty mood music that will help drown out noise but not break my concentration.

The closest thing I could find was the soundtrack to the game Defcon on itunes, and a few select Moby songs.

Does anyone have any good suggestions for this type of music?

Oh damn.

The "genre" you're probably going to find most success with is IDM.

Try:

Boards of Canada
Casino Vs. Japan
The Orb
Monoloke
Thomas Fehlman
Danieto
Amon Tobin
Aphex Twin
Apparat
Autchre (the earlier stuff, the later stuff is pretty insane and not recommended for new listneners)
The Black Dog
Gel-Sol
Christ.
Wagon Christ
FSOL
Shpongle

I can recommend a few more. But the above are pretty much the grandaddys of what you're looking for.

I listen to a lot of this stuff and I'm very picky about it.

And Moby blows ass.

This guy on the IDM mailing list sums it up well:

Yeah I was being completely sarcastic - I hate moby with all my core, even Play was shite to me despite its critical acclaim. Should have been called "car commercials" or something.

I've not heard any Moby since that just because i cant stand the guy, he looks like a penis with glasses. I hate the way he talks, I hate how awkwardly entitled he sounds in interviews. I hate that he has no chin.

Then he came out with this new album and I was curious. I heard people saying good things, so I just had to go out and buy it (ed. find it on rapidshare). I have to admit, there are a couple tracks I like - they have a bit of a orchestral feel to them. BUt there are some tracks, like what you are describing with the 'singing'. He again tries to sing on this and it causes my deep down rage to bubble back up to the surface.

I just don't get why this guy is such a 'darling', im single-handedly using him as the scapegoat for killing any chance of electronic music in the mainstream. Its not a fair accusation, nor do I even have proper grounds for such an accusation. But it's what I believe.

Moby has poisoned the public perception of electronic music, unfortunatley. I wish he never existed.

Moby sucks ass.

Try Chicane or Royksopp - both are a sort of a more mellow style that may be less distracting at work.

I guess electronica or IDM is the genre I am looking for but all of those artists you listed sound like they were made by a high school kid with a $20 midi keyboard.

Have you listened to any of it? You have to actually listen to a few tracks. The whole point of IDM is that it ISN'T repetitive and based on stupid BPM conventions and stock samples. Seriously, listen to Amon Tobin's supermodifed or Casino Vs. Japan's Go Hawaii or Boards of Canada's Geodaggi or Shpongle's "Are you Shpongled" and let me know what you think. If you want $20 midi keyboards, then listen to Moby or Armin Van BUuren or whatever.

Whoa, that is like maybe a half-step above Yanni. If that is what you dig, then that's cool - it's your choice. I can't get into that, though.

Hey OP - are you able to stream Pandora at work? That could be a good way to discover some particular artist oyu like.

I listen to almost anything. I prefer new age and space music for Sunday nights. Big Band's better for work :^D

Good list. Bluetech is pretty sweet. A bit too highly produced (I like dirtier, rougher stuff) but awesome anyway.

And yeah, Aphex is hit or miss for me. I love Selected Ambient Works but I can't really deal with other shit, especially the analord stuff. Bah. 303s make me want to barf.

Check out Pendulum. Some songs to try first are Granite and Propane Nightmares. These are a little up beat and possibly considered more in line with electro-rock but still worth a listen

Chicane's Behind the Sun album is one of my favorites.

No but I have an iphone so I can check out samples on itunes to buy later :p

I remembered another artist that I liked that I forgot about years ago, called Micronaut.

Oh and also the soundtrack from Half Life 2, that sort of music.

Looking at Wikipedia I think the genre I'm looking for is either downtempo or ambient. Any recommendations for these?

Might want to stream Groove Salad -- it's a shoutcast stream. A lot of artists that fit that mold get play on there.

And Pandora is good.
