If 24 is outside the division, it's too large: 24-4 = 20, and something's added to that.

If 24 is part of the division, you have (24+8)/y = 32/y.

if 32/y = 6, then y = 32/6 = 5.333... You can't get that from integers without another division.

I think the normal answer is 44.

24 + 8 = 32 / 2 = 16 x 6 = 96 - 4 = 92
Please tell me this is a joke.

First, that is completely missing the point of order of operations. Second, most of your equalities are not equal. For example, look at your first equality. 24 + 8 is NOT equal to 32 / 2. Never has been, never will be.

According to correct order of operations, you add parentheses like this:
(24) + ((8 / 2) X 6) + (- 4)

Now do the work inside parenthesis before doing anything else. There is no situation in the given math where 24 is added to 8.
 
Also, if the OP's math problem was written correctly, this would never be a confusion to anyone who can do math. Why leave it up to possible incorrect interpretations? Just write it like this and almost everyone will do it right: (24) + ((8 / 2) X 6) + (- 4)
 
I got 116.

24 + 8 / 2 X 6 - 4

Using PEMDAS (remember, multiplication and division are done left-right, whichever comes first)
24 + ((8/2) * 6) - 4

24 + 96 - 4 = 116



EDIT: Nevermind, I got 44. 8/2 = 4, not 16. Me so dumb.

Using PEMDAS (remember, multiplication and division are done left-right, whichever comes first)
24 + ((8/2) * 6) - 4

24 + 96 - 4 = 116

You also added in an extra set of parens that is not needed.

24 + ( 8 / 2 * 6) - 4

Just one set is all that is needed.

I think the prompt is asking the user to write in parenthesis into the equation such that the final answer would be 6?
 
Closest I came is 4 by adding my own. Funny, I was kinda thinking the same thing, as adding your own parentheses is a great way to reinforce PEMDAS

He was clearly piping his results. Not saying it is okay, but that is what he was doing.
Yes. But it both got him the wrong result and spreads the idea that math works that way. It doesn't. Just skip the shortcuts that are factually incorrect. They are not the way to success.

You can't because the end result is 44.

The order of the operations is as follows: Unless with a parentheses, no + or - operation is conducted BEFORE an * or : operation.

24 + 8 : 2 * 6 - 4 =
24 + 4 * 6 - 4 =
24 + 24 - 4 =
48 - 4 =
44

Those that said 44 was the answer are correct.
 
I think I figured it out. Just by ignoring a few rules of math, you can get 6.

I'll multiply everything by 1. That won't affect anything. Since most numbers divided by themselves is equal to 1, we can use y / y = 1.
  • (24 + 8 / 2 * 6 - 4) * y / y
Now, split out that multiplication:
  • (24 * y + 8 * y / 2 * 6 - 4 * y) / y
Lets just choose any completely randomly chosen number. Nothing complicated though. Lets choose, lets say, for no particular reason, that maybe y = 0. Clearly 24 * 0 = 0. Also 4 * 0 = 0. So now we get:
  • (24 * 0 + 8 * y / 2 * 6 - 4 * 0) / y
  • (8 * y / 2 * 6) / y
Well we also know that 8 * y / 2 = 0 = y , so now it becomes
  • (y * 6) / y
Just cancel out the y values and, it is simple
  • 6 * (y / y)
  • 6 * 1
  • 6
Just ignore that one underlined word above.
