need laptop advice, buying a new one

My gf travels from china to the us very frequently and throught out china (beijing, hk, shang hai, guang zhou). Basically, she raised capital to start a hospital and is working on that and has to travel extensively.

Her grad school laptop (ibm t41) is starting to die aside from being a bit long in the tooth.

She basically can spend whatever she wants, but then again, she doesn't want to be extravegant.

Her most important needs are as follows:

Stability/ruggedness
Weight under 5lbs (like to keep a 14in screen)
performance
security
discrete graphics card

minimum requirements would be 2.0+ mobile duo
2 gigs of ram (preferred more)
tolerable graphics card (she uses the pc for everything when traveling)
160g hard drive (pref 7200 rpm)

i work in finance, and i have only ever used ibm/lenovo, its like standard issue, navy/charcoal suit/short hair/ibm laptop.

i was reading good stuff on asus and hp as well as the lenovo.

her budget can be up to 3,000, but since this is a startup, she would prefer to keep it around 2,000.

also does anyone have any thoughts on the fingerprint readers on these things?

any thoughts or recommendations, i would gladly appreciate.

thank you in advance,
rich

If she is comfortable with IBM in the past then she won't have any problem with Lenovo notebook like X60 or T60....I am sure Corkyg will be happy to tell you more about his Lenovo notebook..He travels alot.

Or you can find more about notebook of any brand name at Notebook Review

Happy holidays, Rottie! 🙂

Yes, Rich, - I do have two lappies, the newer of which is a T-60 Lenovo - 14.1-in screen, Core2Duo, 2 GB RAM, 200 GB HDD@7200, etc. I use 2 batteries, one 9 cell and one 6 cell. With the 6 cell, travel weight is about 5 lbs. It came with Vista Business - I upgraded it to Ultimate. Also got the Ultrabay adapter for a 2nd HDD (DVD burner slips out - it slips in) that I use for digital imagery.

It has been great on trips - Greece, Italy, California, Oregon, Ohio, and we're about to head for New Orleans for New Years.

I read your note and my view is to let your GF keep doing what she's doing. She is used to the great Lenovo/IBM keyboard, so keep on keeping on.

The newer T-61 can be had with just about every thing she would want for about $2200.

My other lappie is a H-P dv1000. It has also been a solid performer, but is slower due to an older CPU.
