Need Help With Replacing Sub

With that budget I dunno maybe get a JBL off ebay or something, heck I just bought a martin logan dynamo and even it was 550. You are correct tho should be able to buy any sub and plug it into the receiver. There are good cheap subs like elemental designs but even their lowest is 300.

Are you going to replace the sub it already has then?
This might be more difficult than it seems at first if you're looking to get better bass from the system.
With 2.5" drivers in the satellites and a 6" driver in the sub, your current "sub" is going to be playing a lot of the frequencies that larger speakers would be producing on their own.
If you get rid of the 6" sub and try to replace it with a sub with a larger driver, things might start to sound crappier.
I'm not sure how well it would work, but you might consider using both the existing "sub" and an additional sub that's just dedicated to lower frequencies (you would have to get a sub with crossover controls built into it).
Dayton makes pretty good budget subwoofers. When they go on sale and include free shipping, I think they're pretty hard to beat.

My 1st HT system was a Denon system bought from Good Guys back in the mid 90's. It consisted of very small size drivers also, I paired it up with a JBL PW1000 10" sub and it did fine for HT. Granted its not the same as what I have now but I still use my denon rear surrounds until I finish my Paradigm system. So he might be able to use a bigger sub and get away with it.

Yeah, I'm sure it will work, but matching 2.5" woofers to a 10"? sub isn't really ideal.

Big sound can come in small packages and good pricing now a days, there are several good options, you can have alook at the entry lvl Paradigm series, the cinemas. For price to quality im sure YoYo will agree Paradigm are up there. The thing is with speakers the best are the ones YOU like, cause 10 different people 10 different opinions heh.

If you can't adjust the crossover, you're almost stuck with the same problem.

If the crossover is set to something for that 2.5" / 6" system (maybe 200Hz?) that means that even if you get speakers capable of more bass reproduction, they're not going to be being fed that signal and the sub will still be forced to play those frequencies.

On page 34 of the owners manual, you can select crossover setting of 80, 120, 150, 180hz. This allows for you to use any speakers and subwoofers you want. The amplifier is only robust enough to power speakers of greater than 4ohm impedance. Also, you want the speaker sensitivity to be at least 87-90db per 2.83V/1W/1meter otherwise you may clip the amplifier trying to get the volume you want.
By default, the 150hz crossover is selected due to the nature of the speakers that came with the dvd/receiver unit.

Don't worry, you can easily purchase a subwoofer or new speakers for your system. Your receiver has max 30 watts power, which is sufficient for small rooms, or medium rooms with 90db sensative speakers at least.
If you want to replace speakers and sub, whats budget? For subwoofer, 100$ is a very tight budget and imho, insufficient.

At this point if you're replacing the speaker, sub, and getting a new remote for a low powered receiver, you might want to just go from scratch?
