Never met anybody in my life who didn't have time for exercise, it's a bullsh*t excuse, don't ever, ever believe it.

Xylitol gives me terrible gas & diarrhea - watch out. All of the sugar alcohols do this to me - Mannitol, Sorbitol, Erythritol, Isomalt, Lactitol, HSH, Maltitol.

I can't stand the taste of any of the artificial sweeteners - bitter.
Saccharine (sweet n low) is the least offensive for me
Aspartame (Equal) is the worst
Sucralose (Splenda) has the worst aftertaste for me
Ace K (acesulfane K, Sweet One) makes me sick

I don't particularly like the flavor of Stevia.

All of those artificial sweeteners get added to all sorts of foods and it's a bitch to avoid them. I avoid anything labelled "sugar free" but the stuff is in a lot of random foods. Anything labelled "low fat" probably has starch and sweetener, so I avoid that too.

I do happen to like real sugar :yum: and honey, not so fond of agave. Being diabetic and ultra-low-carb I have to limit them drastically. I miss sugar a lot. It's actually easier to totally avoid sugar than it is to cut down on the stuff. Well, ALMOST totally avoid sugar - I think I'd go insane if I didn't have ONE peanut butter cut mini (2 carbs) or a bite of chocolate chip cookie every now and then.

There's a reason all the baking & cooking posts here make me hungry :( .

What's your target for carbs per meal? My daughter is diabetic, but I'm 100% against artificial sweeteners. I think it's better to have a little bit of something delicious, than all the shit you want. She's been gaining weight, and I'm trying to figure out how to control it. She's very active, diabetic, AND has high cholesterol. That combo makes it tough for me to figure out how to feed her :^/

And it's not artificial either like Aspartame or Sucralose or any of that other crap!

Tastes just like sugar, low on the glycemic index, all natural, and even fights tooth decay - can't get much better than that!

Does it give me an orgasm? I thought not.

Have you tried agave? My wife's been using it for a long time, and I just got around to trying it:

I forget, how old's your daughter? What kind of diabetes?

I generally keep carbs under 40 a day. That's not a lot of carbs, not everyone can do it - but it works for me keeping my BS low and relatively steady. I used to get really intense spikes and lowcarb makes that better. Everybody's different.

I went thru a tons-of-artificial sweetener phase, but the stuff made me sick, so it wasn't much of a temptation. I don't think it's good for anyone, but lots of people do seem to do well with it. Who knows.

My version of eating-all-you-want is to binge on low-carb stuff that I love - pig out on all the filet mignon, lobster, salmon , avocado etc that I can stuff in me. (too bad my budget doesn't support that!) It really does keep me from going nuts on cookies, chocolate and bread/potatoes.

There are three basic food categories (oversimplification) - carbs, protein and fats. If you cut down on carbs, you can't cut down on fat too because then you'd just be eating protein. On lowcarb, even with enjoying the fat, my cholesterol numbers have gotten really good. Just my experience, but poke around a bit, might be something to think about. Doctors I've dealt with hate to tell you that lowcarb can be a good way to lower cholesterol, but sometimes it is. The statins were hell, glad I could get off them.

If she's on insulin, remember that insulin causes weight gain. Some of the other meds do too - what's she on?

This stuff is complicated, best to you & daughter in working it out.

Interesting. I'll have to do some reading on agave, and related glycemic load techniques.

She doesn't eat too much "sugar added" things. Unsweetened tea and seltzer water are the main drinks. A typical dessert is cappuccino with 1.25tsp of sugar, and dark chocolate, or a couple small cookies. Sometimes she'll have a little bit of ice cream, or plain Greek yoghurt with a some honey. My sugar use is very sparing, and always has been, regardless of my daughter's diabetes issues. I've been working on the same 5# bag of sugar for years, and I think my brown sugar predates my daughter :^D

It's all a real PITA. low carbs for the diabetes, and low animal products for the high cholesterol, but she still needs an energy source, and nutrition for high activity :^|

Only 2 viable choices left that's readily available at the consumer level is sucralose(splenda) or stevia.

She's 13, type I, and the cholesterol med she's on is a Crestar(SP?) generic.

She isn't really fat, but she's a dancer, and handling the weight sooner than later is best approach imo. She's pre-professional, and if she sticks with it, she'll have to keep her weight down. Nobody wants a pudgy ballerina :^D She does like modern dance too though, so there's a backup plan as long as she doesn't get huge :^)

In the summer I make all my kool aid with splenda. Granted consuming a gallon or two of the stuff every day may not be the best for my health. But I trust in the restorative powers of cocaine to prevent any long term damage to my health.

reevaluate your need for sweet. why expose your self to designer chemicals just to get a sweet sensation?? most foods and beverages have a natural sweetness that gets lost with sugar and chemical sweeteners. Black coffee has a natural sweetness that varies with the beans you use. Same thing with tea.

Splenda gives me awful headaches. Truvia is much better, at least it's natural and not all chemicals.

Start mixing your cocaine in the Kool-Aid. It'll help numb your taste buds so you don't notice the crappy taste of the Ghetto juice.

OP, I agree with some of the other posters here. If there's no medical reason for her to avoid "real sugar," such as diabetes, then just use "real sugar" in moderation. It contains no fat...and only 16 calories per teaspoon.

xylitol is a natural sweetener though. i wonder if you were consuming straight xylitol or xylitol + an artificial sweetener.

xylitol is made commercially from birch trees, beet sugar and now even corn. It occurs naturally in berries, fruits, vegetables, and mushrooms.

xylitol is also manufactured in our bodies during normal metabolism.

DO NOT let your doggie get a hold of any xylitol though. It can be lethal for them. :(

Xylitol may be a natural substance, but i still don't digest it very well. Natural doesn't automatically mean it's perfect. Alas.

Didn't know about the doggie problem - that's really important to know!

WTF? I just realized...this is a necro-thread, revived by a fucking spammer...
