Need help with finding an alternative sweetener to sugar

My gf gets really bad headaches, and we want to see if it is because of aspartame. To do so we need to replace sweet & low, and other aspartame sweeteners for a bit and see if it helps.

It a PITA to find non-aspartame sweeteners. The only two I have found are sucralose and nutrasweet as possible alternatives. Nutrasweet though might have aspartame as a part of it, anybody have any alternatives?

Sucralose; brand names of Splenda and SucraPlus. You may also try Stevia. You'll find it in health foods stores. Some larger supermarkets may carry it.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with cane or beet sugar. Everything in moderation. Artificial sweeteners won't help your health if you're dumping them into homemade cookie dough, cake batter and custards! 😉

Real Sugar?

Unless you are a diabetic and cannot have real sugar because of insulin deficiency...
Scientific studies have shown that using artificial sweetners do not promote weight loss, or have any advantage over real sugar.

Try convincing a female of this 😉

She believes it helps in her not getting "fat", and trying to convince her otherwise wouldn't help lol.

splenda

I'm pretty sure that he's talking about my thread and Splenda gives me a headache too, though it's not nearly as bad as aspartame.

Anything you can use that doesn't give you a headache?

I thought sweet and low was saccharin, not aspartame?

Yeah, I missed that the first time.

Aspartame = Equal, NutraSweet and Canderel
Saccharin = Sweet'n Low
Sucralose = Splenda and SucraPlus

Yeah, real sugar was the first thing that came to mind.
Did you mean: "Need help finding an alternative to an alternative"? 😛

Honey or molasses for cooking. Real sugar is best, though. You can learn to enjoy food with lower amounts of sugar, though it takes a while. We use too much sugar and salt in this country that people get accustomed to ridiculous amounts. Even if your girlfriend is a diabetic, she can probably eat sugar in moderation (unless she's on like a crazy zero carb diet, or is allergic to cane sugar).

My bad, I screwed that up.

Although she does drink diet coke which does have aspartame in it (which could cause the issue also).

If I wanted to be more accurate then yes, but who wants to do this on teh intarwebz?

Stevia, it is the only natural sweetener and is the only one that does promote weight loss.

Iamwiz will be in here shortly to claim it hasn't been approved in other countries. (He just likes stealing my thunder).

Splenda. Although I have learned to control the amount of sugar I take in daily (Type 2 Diabetic). Before my diagnosis I used to put 15 packets of sugar in a large iced tea drink from Carl's jr. Now I only use three or four at the most. Your GF shouldn't worry about sugar. If she's trying to lose weight then have her start exercising more regularly.

I try to tell her she just needs to exercise and she can eat just about whatever she wants, but she doesn't have much free time with work/school schedule.

I hear that's just a consequence of the second X chromosome.

Somewhat more on-topic but only marginally so:
I once knew someone who had massive headaches and the doc thought it may be abnormally high cerebrospinal fluid pressure. I am not sure whether that was truly the cause or whether it got fixed. It would seem fairly unlikely your gf has the same issue as I would think this is a fairly rare occurrence.

Try agave syrup. Much sweeter than cane sugar so you can use less of it, still natural. You can find it at places like Whole Foods and Trader Joes.

No offense to your gf, but there are very few people (ex: the comatose) that can't fit in at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. If she seriously can't even get 30 minutes in (wake up earlier, if you have to, gives more energy for the day anyway), there is something seriously wrong with her schedule. Excessive stress and loss of sleep are potentially worse for your health than a few extra grams of sugar here and there.

I hope she realizes that "sugar" only accounts for a percentage of blood sugar. Carbohydrates are sugars, too, and starches and carbs that metabolize quickly can spike blood sugar levels fast and hard.

I will bet money the sweetener is not the problem and caffeine is causing the issues.

Diet Coke is closer to the top of the list than the bottom when compared to other sodas caffeine content.

The first thing that comes to mind when someone says they have migranes is caffiene.
