Well it really will depend on who's doing the buying. 12 year olds who were 360 fanatics are still going to be asking for the next Xbox because it's what they know. It's the older adults with money who looks at price, specs, and the BS MS tried to throw out there that might be swayed to PS4. I think they will both do fine in the US, but MS will still lose the world market again, and probably by a far worse margin than last gen.

At $300-400 a pop, fewer people are going to be buying both consoles. People on this board need to keep in mind most people aren't as fanatical about having everything. Many will choose one or the other.

True most people won't buy both right away, they will wait for a price drop just like this generation. Most people didn't buy both right away this time too.

The good thing about the lower prices this new gen + major competition that wasn't there with the year late $600 PS3 is that we're much more likely to see great price drops soon. There's also the consideration that the PS3 and X360 were actually more advanced for their time (and correspondingly expensive to make! even the power supplies were expensive!), and that's not the case this time. We're talking netbook APU, small hard drive, cheap PSU, and bluray is old hat now.

If competition is stiff, I'd say $249 consoles by Xmas '14. We will see lots of people with both consoles at that point, simply because both will have amazing exclusives, and only moron fanboys would willingly miss out on them.

Exactly. In fact, I think both companies would be stupid to not eventually put out a subsidized console with the ps+/XBL monthly payments. People would just see the low price up front and jump in on one or both. But at the end of the day, you are right and if prices get that low and people don't give the other console a look then they would be pretty stupid.

the problem with the twitch integration into xbox1 is that, as far as i know and what they've shown, it simply streams what is on the screen and that is it. no overlays, no additional commentary, no nothing.

so we'll have to see exactly how it all works out when major events like evo are streaming. i don't think they will actually use that feature at all, but just keep on doing what they are doing, so they can continuously switch between different cameras and feeds.

but for the every day average joe, it's neat. for tournaments, not so much.

I had thought one of the bullet points for the streaming was to allow for some overlays. I remember them taking the stream and dumping it into a editor and changing some things. Not sure how that'll work with live streaming, but I believe it's better than just silence on the screen.

Then you'd have a whole crowd of people complaining about paying fees for something they should just be able to own straight out, or worse would be the guy that doesn't use Live and thinks he should be allowed to pay the lower price without the monthly fee.

Of course you will always have the people that complain. That's just part of live in general.

I haven't cared about anything from Nintendo in a while, but my kids are getting to that age where they do. They both have a 3ds XL and love playing anything Mario, which as a gaming dad makes me happy. It reminds me of all the great times I had as a kid. If they drop the price of the Wii U, then I could see me getting one or possibly two (so they both have their own) and grabbing some of the games that are already out.

I think that will definitely be the case :) Winning time for gamers of all kinds!

Part of Nintendo's genius, if you will, is the fact that they are always profitable on their units.

The lagging part on the WiiU is probably getting the costs down on that tablet portion. But with displays getting uber cheap, I bet it won't be long before we see sub-$200 WiiU 32GB, and probably by Xmas '14 have a $149 entry bundle. With solid exclusives and unique stuff that is nowhere else, it will be a pretty vibrant 3rd place that has it's own niche.

My exact feels. I will probably pick one up down the line. My older son is 6 now, and hasn't gotten into gaming yet at all, but has really liked messing about with my old Mario and Kirby games.

My kids are 6 and 4. My 6 year old just beat Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon while my 4 year old is better at mario games than his mom.

Hahah nice! I'm sure my guy will eventually like it more, he plays for about 15 minutes and then runs out of the house to go crazy climbing trees and crashing into things with his bike. I guess I should be thankful, but the time will come when he sits at the game for 4 hours trying to beat some hard level or something :) And that will be just fine, it'll be a really fun thing sharing gaming with him.

Very true. I am pretty lucky too, because while they enjoy gaming, they love being outside much much more.

On the topic of which console to get, I really want to get both, but I also really want to get a gaming pc too.

Yep, I'll probably own both as well. Got the gaming PC already, but the consoles will have so many great exclusives (like The Last of Us right now!), that getting them is a serious move for any legit gamer.

I'll do PS4 first as it will be better for multiplatform console-only titles, and is cheaper. But I do love Forza and there will be fantastic XB1 exclusives as well, so probably pick that up after it drops below $300ish. I don't play online games with consoles, so I don't care about XBL or PS+.

Now? Being outsold by Battlefield 3? You really think that's accurate? There's no way in hell that more people will order Battlefield 3 like 2 years after it came out compared to PS4/XB1 preorders.

Yes, it is accurate because Amazon had it on sale for 5$ for the base game and 15$ for premium. Amazon is also having their digital summer sale, to which millions of customers have purchased downloadable games - A lot of people buy PC digital downloads months or years after the fact. Maybe you're unaware, but GMG, Getgamesgo, gog, and steam are doing summer sales. Millions of people take advantage of this, and amazon.com for the US does not aggregate video game sales from console pre-orders. I easily think a 5$ BF3 game will outsell a 400-500$ preorder console, absolutely.

XB1 will get outsold by PS4 easily this generation, even in the US, where it should end up like 60/40 or 55/45. In Europe XB1 will be annihilated outside of the UK, where they will still lose. In Asia and Japan, they're a zero.

As a preface, I never said the XB1 would win. Yet, your opinion is completely unreasonable here and borderline trolling. Nobody knows whether XB1 or PS4 will win, keep in mind it is a 10 year battle and the prices will shift continually.

I only stated that the decision isn't clear cut. I won't make it a secret that i've preferred XBL on the 360 over PSN online, as it is just a better service in the states - but there are several points which make the decision not so clear cut even at current prices. Twitch is a major factor for some, and to state that not a single console will be sold on this is just ridiculous. No, it won't create 20 million sales. But it is a datapoint that a lot of people will take seriously. It really sounds to me like you and cmddredd are just completely unaware of the world of streaming, it is something that a lot of people participate in and enjoy. And it will cost additional money (50$ or more) on a PS4 for streaming, while it is integrated on the XB1. Many tournaments are streamed via twitch with 20k-30k US in prizes, including EVO which I mentioned earlier - it is the largest fighting game tournament in the world which attracts folks from all over the world. As well, all of the pro-circuit SC2/HOTS tournaments are twich - including MLG which has a substantial number of viewers. So twitch is a selling point, absolutely. Subsidized pricing is another datapoint to consider - MS is strongly rumored to be creating a version with subsidized pricing with XBLG. Sony may do the same, but if this evens out the pricing that is another data point. Additionally, MS will have skype streaming with a camera built in, while the PS4 version costs more money. Personally, I have mixed feelings on this particular data point - I feel like kinect should be optional, not a requirement. Anyway.....will these data points make XB1 the winner? I have no idea, man. I don't even know which console i'm buying.

Again, I never said XB1 would win, although I suspect it will be more popular in the states. Maybe not. Who knows. But you are just sounding unreasonably aggressive and one-sided in your opinion. I can pinpoint tons of examples of superior hardware ultimately losing, so I don't really buy that argument. The average consumer is none the wiser - and then you make blanket statements that the XB1 will lose in every part of the world. Get real man. Nobody knows that and to state that is just ridiculous / trolling. That might happen, but I don't think it will. It'll be an interesting fight nonetheless, as i'm undecided myself on which console to get.

Again, there's no clear-cut winner. I fully expect MS to attempt to even out the pricing difference (how they will do this remains to be seen), if PS4 gains momentum based on price - which will probably happen at B+M outlets - I don't believe MS is stupid enough to let that continue indefinitely. Then again, there are several things you gain from the difference in price, although the hardware is a bit less powerful as you mentioned. We'll see, though.

For the record I would have paid $50 more to have capacitive touch screen like my phone.

For me it's PS4 for now, but I won't buy it this year, I just got a PS3 a few months ago so I'm catching up on the exclusives there for now, plus I have a PS+ subscription so whatever game is released for free for the PS4 I'll own it by the time I can buy the console.
