I urgently need help!

I have DSL and have 3 computers on my LAN to share the connection. We can share the connection, but can't see each other in Network Neighborhood. So I was trying to figure out why and followed some instruction on a site to give the 3 PC's each a unique IP, 192.168.0.? for each of them. After doing so on the second PC (actually a Laptop), it says it has a conflict with a piece of hardware also has an IP of 192.168.0.2 and the interface is disabled. So I thought, OK, I'll just change it back to what it was before and forget about it. But now, I can't get back in windows at all. It just asks me for login name and password, which I put in, then it just stops, doesn't load the desktop besides playing the starting music. Can't get back in so I can't change the settings back! I tried disconnecting the NIC too, but still can't get back in.

Anyone, please help me! Because this is not my computer. I need to get it working! Please please please. I'm very desparate!

Changing IP settings should have nothing to do with booting problems, but to solve your issue, you might want to boot into safe mode and remove the NIC from device manager, reboot and see if that works. You may have to remove other devices if you are getting a resource conflict. You can also goto the network control panel applet in safe mode and remove all network settings from there if you think there is a problem there.

Load NetBEUI.

start, settings, control panel, network.
click add, protocals, microsoft, netBEUI.

do this on both machines. and put them on the same workgroup.

this will resolve your problem.

I booted into safemode, and undo everything I did. Also remove the NIC card and remove just about anything that has to do with networking. I'm surprised that it affects the booting too. But after doind that, I still can't get into windows. Not it only shows login screen, then after I login, only the wallpaper and the startup wav file loads. No desktop, no taskbar, no start menu.

HELP!

Sure sounds like a resource conflict. I might just start taking cards out of my machine to see if the machine will boot without them, then add a card, Video Sound etc.., one at a time and see if windows boots with those cards in. You could also just remove them from device manager in safe mode and let windows pick them up, hopefully assigning resources that do not conflict in the process. Last resort would be to reload windows of course. You can reload on top of your existing install without losing any of your installed software, but I would do that as a last resort. Adding NetBEUI will not solve a booting problem BTW, but I suspect PC_Freak was addressing your name resolution problem. NetBEUI may solve the issue of PC's not showing up in Network Neighborhood but is unecessary. In other words, TCP/IP will work fine for network browsing through NN. It is a little less reliable for it though.

Well, since it is a laptop, there isn't really any card I can remove besides the NIC. I thought about reloading Windows 98, but I don't know if I can just install on top of the current version because it's a laptop. So I assuem the setting will be a little different. It comes with a "recovery CD" (Sony Vaio), but it'll install Win98 AND format the hard drive. I don't know what I can do. ;-(

My bad. Didnt notice it was a laptop. Well removing the PCMCIA NIC would be one step. The next is the other suggestion. Go into safe mode and start removing a bunch of devices. Video, sound being the primary threat to a resource conflict, but not the only suspect.

Not sure if you are responding to the original post about his connectivity issues but adding IPX and NetBEUI will not help his problem now, which is booting into windows.

Well...never mind. I got it fixed. And I SWEAR I'm not touching this laptop anymore. The last two days have been awful for me. Trying to fix this laptop and don't know when the owner will be coming back for vacation. So scary!
I got help from the least expected...the Sony Vaio technical support! And the guy helped me fix it. Anyway, now everything's back to normal and I'm not touching it as long as this laptop has access to the internet and all. I don't care if we can see each other on the LAN now.
